Carex crawfordii

Carex crawfordii Fernald (N-Am.) – A very rare, locally naturalised alien, discovered in 1976 (Duvigneaud & Schumacker 1977) by the Bütgenbach lake near Rocherath and Bütgenbach (nord-eastern and southern parts of the lake) but likely to be present elsewhere in the same area. Possibly little known and locally confused with native Carex ovalis (see for instance Corporaal & al. 2004). Thought to have been introduced by the end of World War II by American troops. In 2010 furthermore discovered in nature reserve Fluithoekduinen in Koksijde (a single specimen; relatively close to a stand with Juncus dudleyi) and in nature reserve Groot Schietveld near Wuustwezel (locally very common in exposed fens in a training area for military vehicles).

In Bütgenbach Carex crawfordii is still persisting but possibly threatened, especially in the southern parts of the lake (Saintenoy-Simon 1996). However, in its northern parts Carex crawfordii is still proliferating (Saintenoy-Simon 1997). It seems well-established and apparently hitherto overlooked in the Groot Schietveld area.
