Skinning Photos

Welcome to my step-by-step skinning page.
What you are about to witness are the ten steps to skinning an animal. These photos were taken by me, of myself skinning a rat.
The reason I have chosen to demonstrate on a rat is because they are small, fairly easy to skin and mount, and readily available. They are a great specimen for a beginner to work with (the only downside to mounting rats is the weird looks you get when you show them to people!). These techniques can be applied to any small mammal, though. I will be using what is referred to as the ventral cut, in which I will be making my incision down the underside of the animal. Usually when mounting an animal, I will make a dorsal cut (down the back of the animal). This makes it easier to get the skin on the form. However, the ventral cut will work for mounting, and it is the best cut to use when making the skin into a pelt.

I would like to make clear that, while there is not very much blood to be seen in the photos (skinning isn't as messy as you think), some shots are a bit graphic. If you love rats - don't look at this. If you are weak of stomach -- don't look. Ok? Ok!

So, if you think you can take it, you may find these photos rather interesting...

Let's start the photos!
