Natural Methods to Remove Mold

Mold is not only unsightly on your walls, tiles, and fixtures, but it can also be damaging both to your health and your home! Even so, it may not seem appropriate to you to eradicate the problem with harsh chemicals and cleaners. Luckily, there are several natural ways to get rid of your mold problem without resorting to those questionable commercial products.

Keep Things Dry

Moisture and dampness is the harbinger of mold. That’s why it so often grows in bathrooms, basements, and heating and cooling systems. Keeping these areas as dry as possible is one of the most effective ways to prevent mold growth. Even if mold is already present, a dehumidifier can work wonders on its own or in combination with any of these other methods. Make sure that you also install extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom to suck extra moisture out of those places.

Purify Your Air

Mold is transported by spores which can easily spread throughout your home and cause respiratory issues and allergic reactions. High-quality air purifiers can help clear the air and keep mold from spreading throughout your home.

Use Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is one of nature’s most powerful antifungal agents. Simply apply it to moldy areas of your home by diluting ten drops in a spray bottle full of water and enjoy your new mold-free surfaces! With just a bit of gentle scrubbing, your home will be looking good as new in no time. Apply every so often just to make sure that the mold doesn’t grow back, and remember to shake your bottle well before each use to distribute the oil evenly.

Vinegar

Vinegar can be used for daily cleaning tasks in almost any room of the house, and mold removal is just one on a long list of its uses. Spray white vinegar (no need to dilute!) on any surface in your home experiencing mold growth issues, wait a few minutes, and then wipe it away. You’ll have a spotless and clean surface! Isn’t vinegar great? Here’s another tip- if you can’t stand the smell, try submerging lemon or orange peels in vinegar for 2 weeks, then strain and enjoy your new all-natural citrus scented cleaning solution.

Distilled Ethanol

Any distilled grain alcohols, such as vodka, will be able to do the job as well. They are also less smelly than vinegar! No need to splurge on high-quality booze, though- bottom-shelf vodkas are generally filtered fewer times and therefore contain more congeners that are toxic to fungus. That makes cheap vodka the perfect choice for warding off mold.
