“Go Ye into All the World, and Preach My Gospel”

So, I’m teaching the lesson in Sunday School next week…and of course I volunteered because the lesson was about Missionary Work.

Lesson 26: “Go Ye into All the World, and Preach My Gospel”

So I was wondering what could possibly help me teach this lesson. The lessons I’ve taught in the past haven’t been ALL that great. So I started thinking, I know I like lessons where there’s an interesting beginning to get everyone involoved and interested.

Object Lessons: Teaching with Objects  volume1 by Linda Dastrup is a book I would highly reccomend to any one preparing a lesson. It can be used for Primary, Young Women’s, Young Men’s, Priesthood, Relief Society, or Family Home Evening. You have all the basic gospel topics, and each one has something you can photocopy as a handout to the class and something you can use for an object lesson.

I’ve used it before for Family Home Evening. I was teaching about Family Relationshhips. I personally thought this object lesson was very good. It consisted of getting different baking items like Cake mix, eggs, oil, water in a measuring cup, a bowl, mixing utensils, a cake pan, cooking spray, a spatula, and a timer. With each object, I had to label each one to represent something. For example the cake mix was labeled SERVICE. The eggs were labled TRUST, SUPPORT, and SACRIFICE. The objects represented everything a good family relationship should have. You need all these items together to be able to bake a cake. Likewise, there are certain ingredients, or characteristics, that a family should have to have a strong relationship.

Presentation:

Family relationships are like making a cake. Show the bowl labeled prayer. With a prater we can work on necessary ingredients for making a good family. Follow the directions on the cake mix.

AS you add each ingredient read the label you placed on it. Service (cake mix), Kindmess (water), Patience (Oil), Trust, Support, Sacrifice (Eggs).

When all the ingredients are in the bowl, say, “We can smooth out problems with COMMUNICATION (use mixing utensil and stir well).”

To avoid sticky situations (spray the pan with cooking spray) we must be HONEST with each other.

The cake pan represents a strong gospel foundation. To have success with our family relationships all of these ingredients must be added to a strong gospel foundation. Pour the batter into the pan.

Set the timer. The right amout of time for baking a cake is very important. The right amout of time spent together in family activities, scripture study, and prayer is very important.

For best results watch the cake carefully whil baking. For best results as a family, watch out for each other.

Topp of your cake by spreading frosting on it. Top off each day with your family by spreading LOVE.

Our #1 priority is our family (show one candle).

So now for my missionary lesson, all I need is a basket of apples of different shapes, sizes, and colours. I cut open the apple and ask, “How many seeds can you see in this apple?” Then I ask, “How many more apples could come from these seeds?” How does this relate to missionary work?

It’s impossible to know how many lives could be changed through sharing the gospel with one person. Imagine the harvest that could take place as the gospel is shared with many.

One word.

Brilliant.

So now I’m all excited to give the lesson.
I think I’ve got it all.
But I musn’t forget to ponder and pray about what is best to teach the class from the manual.

“You can count the number of seeds in a single apple, but you can’t count teh number of apples in a single seed.”
