A friendly community orchestra that always welcomes new members. Our conductor is Arturo Serna an enthusiastic conductor and outstanding celllist who trained originally in Venezuela through the Il Sistema project. We put on 2 concerts a year. Playing standard ranges from about Grade 5 to professional. There are no auditions and the music teachers in our group are always willing to offer technical advice.

The band was formed six years ago for beginners and returning players, over the years the band has matured into a competent concert band playing a variety of music genres. We welcome new players of all instruments especially Brass players. New members of grade 3 – 5 or above will find our music enjoyable. A loan of an instrument can sometimes be arranged for up to two years. We play at a number of local events throughout the year. Apollo Wind Band is part of the Avon Wind Band Association which comprises four Wind Bands all at different levels ranging from grade one players upwards.

The Argyle String Orchestra is Bath's oldest ensemble, established over 100 years ago. We we are a friendly orchestra and enjoy playing a wide variety of music from standard classics to less familiar works. Although there are no auditions, most players are at least Grade 5 standard; we would suggest you come along for a trial to see how you get on. Concerts are held at the end of each term.

You don't have to be a fire fighter to join! We are an all-comers concert wind band (Flutes, Clarinets, Saxes, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpets, Trombones, Tuba, Euph, Drums) playing a wide variety of music, representing the Avon F&RS. Bands for all abilities, including a 'returners' band' and a band for adult beginners. Bath Youth Folk Band performs at events and festivals throughout the year, mostly local but occasionally further afield such as the prestigious Southdown Music Festival. We have a junior and senior band so cater for students from grade 1-grade 8+ ( age 8-18). All instrumentalists welcome as long as you can play by ear and have an interest in folk traditions.

Founded in October 2018, the Bath Tub Orchestra is a friendly mixed ability community orchestra. We play all kinds of music from pop songs, to jazz, blues, film soundtracks and classical favourites and we perform at local events and festivals.

Established in 2005, Blooming Flutes welcomes current learners and those returning to flute playing. Supportive, like-minded flautists meet regularly to enjoy a broad repertoire of carefully selected pieces chosen to engage and challenge a mixed ability group with a minimum of Grade 3 standard. Led by Sue Fletcher DipABRSM, Blooming Flutes actively engage in community performances raising funds for Nordoff Robbins – the UK’s largest music therapy charity.

If you play a wind instrument in the Tavistock area (Devon) you will have plenty of fun in this lively wind band that meets in a local school on alternate Thursdays.

The 'BBB’ was formed in a local farmer’s barn in January 2013. Advertised in local parish mags, it has since grown from just three 'fiddle' players to a very mixed instrumental bunch comprising a core of 40+ regulars. It’s an 'all comers welcome' centre for those wishing to learn, improve and play together. Our brave musical director arranges parts for all abilities - absolute beginners to those well graded - expanding a repertoire of traditional, contemporary and classical pieces. No fees as such, just £25 per annum to cover accommodation costs. We raise many thousands of pounds for various charities at our “an evening with the BBB” type performances. However our primary aim remains having fun just playing together. So why not get in touch and give us a try?

BHCO was established in 1987 and works with professional conductors. The standard is high and the orchestra uses St George's Bristol as its performing venue.

The String Orchestra of about 25 players was formed in 1975 and is based in Bridport, Dorset, our players coming from a wide area of West Dorset, East Devon and Somerset. On occasions weare joined by wind and brass instruments for larger works and normally perform three concerts each year. We have a broad repertoire embracing many composers from baroque to modern.

Bright Sounds is a street band with players of all abilities and ages based in South Bristol. We are looking for more Brass players along with woodwind and percussion. We have played at The Harbour Festival, Bedminster Lanterns and other local events. There is no pressure to play in public but with a bit of encouragement new members often feel confident enough to play gigs.

We are an acoustic band modelled on the village band of Thomas Hardy’s day, when local musicians would play at all the local gatherings – weddings, May Day celebrations fetes , etc. We have wide range of acoustic instruments and play lively upbeat dances and songs of the British Isles wearing period dress for gigs! We currently pay £8. Come to the first session free. In period dress we have performed in lunchtime concerts, fairs and fetes, dances and most recently (June) Bristol Old Vic 250 birthday celebration, the opening of the new Clevedon Pier. We are a friendly and inclusive group welcoming all acoustic instruments, there are no auditions and music is provided in advance for those who are not such confident readers. An ability to read music / sight read around grade 3 would help enjoyment, but some participants play by ear and don't read music.

 

Bristol CoMA is an amateur ensemble committed to playing new music to a high standard. We are on the look-out for new members to join us - all instruments welcome, the only provisos are that you should read music and be at least grade 5 standard. We usually play three concerts a year, including performances at the Victoria Rooms and Colston Hall's Lantern. Our programmes are always exciting: Recently we have collaborated with early-music groups and regularly work with Bristol University students studying postgraduate composition. We are a friendly orchestra that meets monthly to enjoy playing through a symphony and overture, or equivalent. We play for pleasure so there are no formal concerts (and no ticket selling!). The programme changes every two sessions and we hold one (free) concert a year - followed by an American supper - for family and friends . We are a group of around 25 musicians who all love reggae! We draw our musical influences from reggae, ska, jazz and classical genres. We play a mixture of our own compositions and well know reggae standards, arranged especially for the orchestra. We had our first gig in 2010 and since then have played at various events in and around Bristol and beyond. This year we played the main stage at the Bristol Harbour Festival and attracted an audience of thousands! New players always welcome, please get in touch.

The Bristol Symphony Orchestra (BriSO) is made up of both professional and high-standard non-professional musicians from across the region and has quickly established itself as a leading ensemble in the Southwest. BriSO strives to reach a wide audience with exciting and innovative programmes that draw on the orchestra’s versatility and exceptional musicality. Highlights include performances with world renown soloists such as violinist Jennifer Pike and soprano Rebecca Evans, cross-genre collaborations with internationally acclaimed jazz artists such as Andy Sheppard and Get the Blessing, as well as world premieres of compositions by living composers including a live screening of Dracula (1931) with music by Sam Foster. We meet fortnightly on Monday evenings and perform 3-4 concerts per year in venues such as St George's Bristol. We welcome enquiries from experienced orchestral musicians (minimum Grade 8 standard or above) who are interested in joining us.

We have 4 ensembles: Concert Wind Band, Parade Band, Big Band, Corps of Drums. Run under the auspices of the Royal Marine Band Service and part of the Royal Navy, the band is made up of ex service and civilian musicians a lot of which are former Royal Marines and Army so the standard is high, but we also encourage lower grade instrumentalists. Concert Band is the main focus of weekly rehearsals as well as Corps of Drums (run in the style of the Royal Marine CofD). Parade Band is a marching band formed for special occasions and Big Band is for Senior (semi pro) members. We rehearse at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth which is a military base so auditions are by special arrangement so we can organise a security pass. Always keen to hear from musicians from all walks of life but especially retired military service men and women. Membership is free and we provide uniforms and occasionally service instruments to participants.

A large, friendly, Bristol-based orchestra whose emphasis is on being sociable, and fun at the same time as producing great music to a high standard. Players of all instruments and ages are very welcome.

 

We are a friendly group of musicians and throughout the year perform our popular and varied musical repertoire at many public venues in the locality, including Clevedon Bandstand, Grove Park Weston, Cadbury Garden Centre, the Mall at Cribbs Causeway and various local fetes and fairs. Cadbury Wind Band is open to all ages and all abilities and always welcomes new players in all sections without auditions.

The Orchestra would welcome interest from potential new members, and are looking for a playing ability of Grade 6 or higher.

We are a brass band representing the City of Bath. The band plays at many different events in and around the city, including summer concerts in the local parks and gardens, and performances in local churches and community halls. Cornwall Chamber Orchestra is a classical music ensemble established in the 1980s and dedicated to celebrating and performing a varied programme of historical and contemporary chamber music. There are occasional vacancies which will be advertised.

We are a friendly and ambitious full symphony orchestra playing concerts at venues across Cornwall. We rehearse in Truro on a Monday evening but attract players from all over Cornwall. Our concerts range from full symphonies and concertos with professional soloists through to our family concerts to encourage the next generation of players. We also run other events to encourage and develop the performance of classical music across Cornwall.

A friendly inclusive community orchestra meeting regularly to play varied classical works, mainly for our own pleasure. EUSO is a symphony orchestra based at the University of Exeter predominantly made up of students, but we also welcome members from the wider community to join us, particularly string players. A full symphony orchestra meeting in Exmouth on Saturday mornings in term time. The emphasis is on a wide range of musical styles from light classical to Latin via the shows and film music. We have a lot of fun in the process and aim to do just two concerts annually so that we can really work on fine tuning an exciting programme.

Flute Cocktail is a friendly community Flute Choir based in Tavistock, Devon made up from local members, some who travel over 25 miles to rehearsals and a few from locations in-between! We recommend players are at least Grade 4 equivalent standard or above, with many of our members having attained Grade 8+. Ages of group members have ranged from 11 to 92 years old. We perform at a few fairly informal events each year and every other year do some more formal concerts, mainly in churches in the area. New members are always welcome - just get in touch or come along to a rehearsal.

Frome Symphony is an exciting amateur orchestra for Frome (Somerset, UK) and the surrounding area, established in 2001. We welcome new members, particularly those who play stringed instruments.

The HMS Seahawk Volunteer Band is predominantly a wind band but also a marching band comprising of serving and civilian members regularly performing at venues around the region including the annual Volunteer Band Festival in Portsmouth. Our repertoire is vast and caters for all occasions from marches to jazz, classical overtures to big band. The band is looking for new members of a good musical standard to join especially Drum Kit, Woodwind and Cornet players.

Welcome to the Honiton Youth Orchestra. We are a volunteer run orchestra for children in the East Devon Area. Children can join from any age, from approx. Grade 1+.Our Musical Director is Dan Morgan, a professional musician and qualified teacher. He is supported by enthusiastic parents, many of whom are also musicians and able to help and play alongside the children. We are a gentle, fun & welcoming group and a particular ideal place to begin playing in a bigger group. We are particularly short of brass at the moment.

Moorland Mandolins is a mandolin orchestra based in Moretonhampstead on Dartmoor in Devon that was formed in 2022 by a group of enthusiastic players from Devon and Cornwall. North Wiltshire Symphony Orchestra (formerly North Wiltshire Orchestra) is one of the oldest orchestra’s in Wiltshire having recently celebrated its 50th birthday. The orchestra is an amateur symphony orchestra playing to a high standard and gives 3 concerts a year at St. Andrews Church in Chippenham. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday at Rowde Primary School near Devizes with 7 rehearsals and a final ‘dress’ rehearsal on the day. The orchestra prides itself not only on making music to a very high standard but also on the equally important aspects of having a great social life and being part of the community. The South West’s first LGBT+ orchestra, launched in October 2016. We welcome all players from across the LGBT+ spectrum as well as their friends. We rehearse over a weekend/series of weekends and finish with a performance. The next weekend session is planned for early 2017. We are a small, friendly local orchestra. We do three or four concert performances a year, including one in which we accompany a local choir. Subs: £20 per term. All players welcome.

We are a friendly adult concert band playing a wide variety of music ranging from classical to film scores, through swing and jazz, to original works for wind band. Our members range from students to retired people from all walks of life, but all enjoy playing together while improving our standard and broadening our repertoire. Pill Festival Band is based in North Somerset and its objective is to provide an encouraging environment for local musicians at any age and at any standard of play, and also to provide musical accompaniment to local events. Pill Festival Band is open to anyone, whether a seasoned player or a complete beginner. As an orchestral band we include a wide range of instruments.

Plymouth's own Symphony Orchestra has been central to the musical life of the city for 132 years, and continues to perform challenging music ranging from the traditional to the contemporary.

Our evening schedule runs as follows: 6:30 to 7:45 Sectional rehearsals, working on music for strings, wind and brass as well as full orchestra sectionals; 8:00 to 9:30 Full orchestra. We also have 3 workshop days through the year, 2 for the individual sections and 1 for full orchestra

The Portishead Concert Band was formed over 30 years ago and has been practising and performing locally ever since. It is a wind band of about 20 enthusiastic musicians playing brass and wood-wind instruments plus a drummer and a bass. We would be very pleased to welcome new players. At the moment we are especially looking for euphonium and tuba players.

We are an enthusiastic community wind band; 50 members strong! We play a wide range of music with something for everyone. Royal Wootton Bassett Concert Band is seeking more players. We are a friendly band seeking to expand our repertoire and concert footprint. We are particularly looking for more Brass players (Cornet/Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone), and Saxophone players, but all players are most welcome.

Royal Wootton Bassett Orchestra is a relaxed, friendly amateur orchestra. We give three concerts a year with occasional extra events. Members are mostly adult, but we do have a few younger members. There are no auditions. We take players at about Grade 5 or over. Strings are normally welcome, but places for other instruments (regulars and deps) vary from season to season according to our vacancies and programmes.

Founded in 1974, this small string orchestra has at present twenty two players, some of whom are founder members.

We play a wide range of music from 'Nimrod' at the wreath laying in the Guildhall Square during the Remembrance Parade to 'Young Person's Guide to John Williams'. There are no subscriptions but players must become members of the Royal British Legion. Socialise with other musicians in the break over a cup of tea whilst deciding how many raffle tickets to buy! Saltford Orchestra offers the chance, about nine times a year, to get together for a morning, to rehearse and play through a major orchestral work in a friendly and supportive environment. Music is made available in advance. There are opportunities for new players, only strings at present.

We are a group of wind players who meet in combinations of 8, 9 or 10 to play octets, nonets and decets. We play solely for our own pleasure (ie no concerts); we do try to play each piece to the best of our ability. We have a large library, and because we have more players than the two needed for each instrument, no-one has to commit to playing every week. Twice a term we provide the woodwind section of the Saltford Orchestra (who have their own website entry) to work on a single piece (usually a symphony) under a professional or semi-professional conductor. We currently have vacancies for french horn and bassoon players.

Saxophonics is a friendly community saxophone ensemble with an emphasis on enjoyment and fun. We are always happy to welcome new saxophone players - all players are welcome, from about grade 3 (or equivalent experience) to grade 8 and beyond; soprano, alto, tenor, or bari. Our repertoire includes many of the iconic sax classics and we aim to provide varied parts for players of all levels of experience. We do several fairly informal performances each year.

We are a very friendly, full orchestra formed in 2007 in Camelford, North Cornwall, welcoming all those over 18 who wish to learn, improve and play together, no audition or minimum standard is required but the ability to read music would be useful. We range from 25-45 in numbers. What we lack in technique we make up for in enthusiasm and humour!! Our repertoire is predominantly classical, traditional and contemporary. We perform two or three indoor concerts per year, including a 'Last Night of the Proms' type concert. Fees at present are only £20 per term to cover the hire of the hall, heating etc. Players of all orchestral instruments, including percussion, are invited to come along and try us out before committing themselves!

We are a very friendly and supportive community flute ensemble performing 3/4 times a year. New players are always welcome!

The orchestra for each concert is formed from the membership as required and rehearsals take place in the weeks prior to a performance. In addition to these rehearsals are repertoire evenings where members rehearse music which is not intended for immediate public performance.

We play a concert at the end of each term and various mid term concerts if they arise. In the last year we have played the Colston Hall and the Lord Mayor's Ball held at the Bristol City Football club.

The Orchestra plays music from a variety of styles including Baroque, Classical, Twentieth Century both ‘serious’ and light-hearted and welcomes new members who want to develop ensemble skills and keen to explore a range of music. In concerts members often perform as soloists with the Orchestra or in a separate item themselves. The minimum standard is grade 4. The orchestra is always looking for string players and we would like to include Brass and Percussion as we grow. We are well served with Clarinets and Flutes although we have space for another Oboe and a Bassoon / and or Bass Clarinet. Members pay a subscription which covers hire of rehearsal and concert venues and the fee of the musical director. There is no audition but players are welcomed to two rehearsals to find out what we do and whether the musical director is happy that the person will cope with the demands of the music.

The South West Philharmonia and Chorus formed in 2015 under the direction of Marcus Alleyne, performing three core concerts per year in Plymouth. Under Marcus’ leadership we have created a safe, accessible and inclusive place to play, sing and to create and are proud to maintain a strong and steady core of 135 musicians. SWPC is a non-auditioned ensemble however we do ask orchestral players to have appropriate ability, but this could be your first step or return to ensemble playing. We are currently seeking to strengthen our viola, trumpet, and trombone sections and would be particularly keen to hear from a principal trumpet player. We are also looking for a percussionist, a second oboist and second bassoonist to join us. Our flute and clarinet sections are currently full.

A band of enthusiastic amateur and semi-professional musicians, who perform in concerts in and around Exeter. All concerts are for charity. The band plays a wide variety of music including military marches, classical overtures, musicals, film themes, swing and jazz.

A classic 16 piece Big Band playing 40s/50s (mostly) swing & dance band numbers. We all donate our time for free & play in order to fund raise for charities. We are currently looking for TROMBONE players

The Wednesday Orchestra is a friendly and longstanding repertoire orchestra that is inclusive of a range of abilities. Under our professional conductor, Stewart Stunell, we tackle a diverse range of classical works from overtures to symphonies, with the focus on enjoyment and achieving the highest standard that we can. We do not perform formal concerts, but twice a year we undertake a 'playthrough' of the works we have been rehearsing for family and friends. We are always keen to welcome new members. There are no auditions, but we would suggest that you should probably be of grade 5 ability or above to enjoy the experience. Lapsed players are welcome! From time to time some sections of the orchestra may be full, but we will do our best to accommodate all. Subs are currently £28 a term.

Thornbury Clarinet Choir is for adult clarinettists of grade 7 and above. We have clarinets from the small Eb to the contra-bass. Good sight-reading skills needed.

Founded in 2002, the orchestra has grown rapidly and now performs large symphonic works. While aiming for high standards, we remain a fun, friendly and enthusiastic group. Players need to be of a good standard and wishing to improve. Recent works played by the orchestra include Elgar's Enigma Variations, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and excerpts from Holst's The Planets.

The orchestra performs three series of concerts a year in Totnes, Torquay, Dartmouth and other venues in the area.

Trowbridge Symphony Orchestra has a long history having been formed in 1923. It draws its members from around Wiltshire and meets regularly during term time, performing 3 concerts per year at differing venues, including The Wiltshire Music Centre Bradford on Avon, Holy Trinity Church Bradford on Avon and St James' Church Trowbridge. Recent concerts have included Shostakovitch Piano Concerto no.2, Beethoven Symphony no.3, Dvorak Symphony no.8, Sibelius Symphony no.2, and Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue. Vacancies exist in several sections of the orchestra.

Truro Sinfonia is an amateur orchestra which meets for the enjoyment of the players. It is for you to play in the company of other musicians, and above all, for you to enjoy playing in a friendly and noncompetitive environment. New players welcome - our members include both experienced players and the less so, although not beginners. There are no auditions or criteria for people to join.

The Wessex Concert Orchestra was originally formed in 1940 as the Westinghouse Concert Orchestra and was re-launched in September 2004 as an independent, regionally-orientated orchestra for North Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire & BaNES. We are proud to present a varied and popular repertoire which includes film music, British light music and concert works. Our exciting and challenging programming requires a reasonable degree of competency, but we do not set a strict, grade-based standard for membership. The West Cornwall Concert Band was formed in 1998 and is a well established concert band within the area of west Cornwall. Westerly Showband is a lively, compact, performance wind band. It provides music and entertainment for the whole community. It offers members a rehearsal programme which is both satisfying and challenging. It strives to delight audiences with a wealth of well-loved tunes and priceless memories!

The Weston Light Orchestra presents concerts of Light Music in the tradition of Palm Court and Grand Hotel given mainly as charity events in Churches in North Somerset and also at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare. Usually about 8 concerts a year.

The Charity started a new band for beginners in September 2014. The band is now 16 strong and comprises Flutes, Clarinets, Oboe, Saxophones, Tenor Horn, Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba.

Whether you enjoy the classics, film soundtracks or a catchy showtune, there will be something for you. Concerts are performed at the Church 2 or 3 times a year. The cost is £5 per session, after free taster session. New members of all abilities welcome (need to be able to read music).

We are a band of amateur and semi professional musicians who perform fund raising and charity concerts in and around the Yeovil area. Vacancy for drummer/percussionist, must be able to read music and own their own kit.

The Zephyrian Woodwind Orchestra was founded in 1994 by conductor, Richard Caradon, as a group with a minimum standard of Grade 5 for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and saxophones, In 1998 ZWO won the Gold Award in the NCBF regional finals, and has played annually in the Bath Music Festival in May, as well as many concerts for local charities. New pieces have been commissioned from composers, such as Judith Bailey, Eddie Maguire, Michael Short & Geoff Poole. The clarinet section also plays as a separate group, with Eb, alto, & contralto.
