There has been much debate about Tom Cruise’s height in the media, in magazines, and on the web. Some reports state that he is no more than five feet five inches tall and while others report roughly 5 feet seven inches tall. Back in 1988, the man himself, however, was quoted as saying, “I have always been pretty much the same weight, 147 pounds at 5 feet 9 inches.” So how tall is Tom Cruise? Americans are obsessed with celebrities, so there will always be some sort of hype about some of the most, well, ridiculous things we can think of. What’s even worse is that other celebrities continue to fuel the fire surrounding Tom Cruise’s height. They claim that Tom Cruise is “short” or “diminutive”; Nicole Kidman has made remarks claiming that she is several inches taller than him, and she was quoted as saying (since the break-up) that she “can wear heels again.” Scottish comedian Billy Connolly, has stated that “Tom was at least 5ft 10′.” Richard Harris said “Tom Cruise is a midget and he has eight bodyguards, all 6ft 10in, which makes him even more diminutive. It’s an absolute joke. Actors are unimportant.” This was quoted in the Mirror Newspaper in 2001. Others claim that Cruise wears elevator shoes and works with shorter actresses so that he appears taller. For the record, IMDb reports that Tom Cruise is five feet seven inches tall and his biggest fan website (Tom Cruise Fan) reports five feet eight inches tall.
With all of the hype and gossip surrounding Tom Cruise’s height, the truth is- unless you know Tom Cruise personally or you have taken his measurements yourself, you will never (ever) know exactly how tall he is. What we do know is that Tom Cruise is one of the top 100 stars of all times with a career that is nothing short of spectacular. During the course of his career, Tom Cruise has produced roughly 28 top films, earned several Golden Globe Awards, several Oscar Nominations, and an average domestic box office gross of $99.9 million per film. And that’s not all:
-The total gross of Tom Cruise’s movies to date is $2.6 billion. Only Tom Hanks has done better.
-In June 2006 Cruise took the No.1 spot on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most powerful stars.
-In the last 10 years all but one of Tom Cruise’s movies grossed more than $200 million worldwide.
-Tom Cruise’s top-grossing movie was War of the Worlds (2005), which earned $590 million around the around the globe.
Tom Cruise is also considered a hero. He came to the rescue of people on three different occasions in 1996; he took a woman injured in a car accident to the hospital and paid her bill, saved several boys from being crushed in a crowd, and he even saved people from a fire while yachting. Tom Cruise also has two adopted children with Nicole Kidman: Isabella Cruise (born in 1993) and Connor Cruise (born in 1995). He is currently married to actress Katie Holmes who gave birth to their first child, Suri Cruise, on April 18, 2006.
