Dia duit!
These words, often used to say "Hello," are actually a Gaelic blessing meaning "God be with you."

Bail ó Dhia ar an obair!
It means "God bless the work."
  A few proverbs:
The older the fiddle, the sweeter the tune.
~~~~~~~
Drink is the curse of the land.
It makes you quarrel with your neighbor.
It makes you shoot at your landlord, and
It makes you miss him.
~~~~~~~
You'll never plow a field
By turning it over in your mind.

May God grant you many years to live,
For sure He must be knowing
The earth has angels all too few
And Heaven is overflowing

May the face of every good news
And the back of every bad news
Be toward us.
~~~
May the roof above us never fall in
And may we friends gathered below never fall out.
May you have warm words on a cold evening
A full moon on a dark night
And the road downhill all the way to your door.
~~~
May you live to be a hundred years
With one more year to repent.

The great God between your shoulder blades
To protect you in your going and returning,
The Son of the Virgin Mary be close to your heart,
And the perfect Holy Ghost be keeping an eye on you.
Blessing for a child leaving home

For my mother, who raised me at her breast,
And for my father,
Who raised me by the work of his bones,
I trust in the Son of God
When they enter His presence
That there will be a hundred thousand
Welcomes for them
In the heavens of peace.
Blessing for parents

When your eyes shall be closing
And your mouth shall be opening
And your senses be slipping away,
When your heart shall grow cold
And your limbs be old,
God comfort your soul on that day.
Comfort at death

God be with you, all gathered here.
May God and Mary be with you.
As we are now, so once were you.
As you are now, so shall we be.
May we all prosper
Under the bright King of the world.
Blessing in a graveyard

Signore del mondo,
il pane della terra ci sostiene,
il vino rallegra il nostro cuore
e l'olio illumina il nostro volto.
Sii benedetto per queste creature,
doni preziosi che vengono da te
per la consolazione di noi uomini.

Translation:
Lord of the World,
Bread from the earth sustains us
Wine gladdens our heart
And oil makes our faces shine.
May You be blessed for these creations --
Precious gifts that come from you
For the comfort of us human beings

Thank you for the food we eat.
Thank you for the world so sweet.
Thank you for the birds that sing.
Thank you God for everything!
Amen.

Lord, family togetherness is wonderful!
So, too, are the things
That make each of us different.
Help us to be both ...
Together and different, in love.
And bless our family with peace.

Circle me, Lord.
Keep protection near
And danger afar.
Circle me, Lord
Keep hope within.
Keep doubt without.
Circle me, Lord.
Keep light near
And darkness afar.
Circle me, Lord.
Keep peace within.
Keep evil out.

Dear God, be good to me;
The sea is so wide,
And my boat is so small.
Fisherman's prayer

Health and long life to you
Land without rent to you
The woman of your choice to you
A child every year to you
A long life, and may you die in Ireland!

May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping.

Lord, make this home a happy place,
Aglow with warmth and cheer,
A friendly place so all who come,
Feel truly welcome here,
A peaceful and contented place
That's filled with Thy pure love.
Lord, make this home a happy place
And bless it from above.

Our family is a circle of love and strength.
With every birth and every union, the circle grows. Every joy shared adds more love.
Every crisis faced together makes the circle stronger.

Lord, make the door of this house wide enough to Receive all who need love,
Narrow enough to shut out all who breed hate.

Make the threshold smooth enough to be no Stumbling block to children,
Rugged enough to turn back evil.

Lord, make the door of this house
The gateway to your love.

Christ is the head of this House,
The unseen guest at every meal,
The silent listener to every conversation.

Today... I wish you a day of ordinary miracles.
I wish you a day of little things to rejoice in.
I wish you a day of happiness and perfection...

little bite-size pieces of perfection that give you the funny feeling that God is smiling on you, holding you so gently because you are someone special and rare.

I wish You a day of Peace, Happiness and Joy.
From Chris Clu

May you have -
Walls for the wind
And a roof for the rain,
And drinks beside the fire.

Laughter to cheer you
And those you love near you,
And all that your heart may desire
Celtic Blessing- dedicated to Joyce W.L.

May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine upon your window pane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near to you and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
In memory of Elma Loretta King

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
In memory of Roy Hoard

The lands around my dwelling
Are more beautiful
From the day
When it is given to me to see
Faces I have never seen before.
All is more beautiful,
All is more beautiful,
And life is thankfulness.
These guests of mine
Make my house grand.
Eskimo Blessing

Dear God, bless those who bear the hardship of famine and those who share their plenty with others. Wrap Thy love around those who come to us in trust. Take care of those who wander far from us in anger. Amen.
Hawaiian Prayer - dedicated to Kiana Kaori O.

O Dio,
che ci concedi ogni giorno
il pane, il vino, e l'olio
saziandoci nella tua benevolenza.
benedici questo nostro stare a mensa
e donaci la gratitudine verso di te
e verso tutta la creazione

O God,
every day You give us
bread, wine and oil
satisfying us with Your generosity.
Bless our being together at this table
and give us gratitude toward You
and toward all of creation.
Italian blessing

May the blessing of light be on you
Light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you like a great peat fire,
So that stranger and friend may come and warm himself at it.
And may light shine out of the two eyes of you,
Like a candle set in the window of a house,
Bidding the wanderer come in out of the storm.

May the blessing of the rain be on you,
May it beat upon your Spirit
And wash it fair and clean,
And leave there a shining pool where the blue of Heaven shines, And sometimes a star.

May the blessing of the earth be on you,
Soft under your feet as you pass along the roads,
Soft under you as you lie out on it, tired at the end of day;
And may it rest easy over you when, at last, you lie out under it.
May it rest so lightly over you
That your soul may be out from under it quickly;
Up and off and on its way to God.
And now may the Lord bless you, and bless you kindly. Amen.
Scottish Blessing -- dedicated to little Imiko

God to enfold you,
God to surround you,
God in your speaking,
God in your thinking.

God in your sleeping,
God in your waking,
God in your watching,
God in your hoping.

God in your life,
God in your lips,
God in your soul,
God in your heart.

God in your sufficing,
God in your slumber,
God in your ever-living soul,
God in your eternity.
Celtic -- dedicated to Chika-chan

If there is righteousness in the heart,
There will be beauty in the character.
If there is beauty in the character,
There will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.
So let it be.
Scottish Blessing --Submitted by Billy, Hawaii

I arise today through a mighty strength:
God's power to guide me,
God's might to uphold me,
God's eyes to watch over me;
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to give me speech,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to shelter me,
God's host to secure me.
Gaelic --Dedicated to Marion M.

[God commanded Moses...] Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:

  • The LORD bless you and keep you
  • The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you
  • The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them. Num 6.23-27

Jehovah te bendiga y te guarde.
Jehovah haga resplandecer su rostro sobre ti,
Y tenga de ti misercordia.
Jehovah levante hacia ti su rostro,
Y ponga en ti paz.
Num 6.24-26

Der HERR segne dich und behüte dich;
Der HERR lasse sein Angesicht leuchten über dir
Und sei dir gnädig;
Der HERR hebe sein Angesicht über dich
Und gebe dir Frieden.
Num 6.24-26

Joy is the flag that you fly
From the castle of your heart,
When the King is in residence there.

Slainte mhor agus a h-uile beannachd duibh
Good health and every good blessing to you!
A Gaelic Prayer

If after Kirk ye bide a wee,
There's some would like to speak to ye,
If after Kirk ye rise and flee
We all seem cauld and still to ye.
The one that's in the seat with ye
Is stranger here than ye, maybe.
All here have got their fears and cares,
Add ye your soul unto our prayers,
Be ye our angel unawares.
Scottish Blessing

May the hills lie low
May the hills lie low,
May the sloughs fill up,
In thy way.

May all evil sleep,
May all good awake,
In thy way.
From: “Mystery on the Isle of Skye”

You are the peace of all things calm
You are the place to hide from harm
You are the light that shines in dark
You are the heart's eternal spark
You are the door that's open wide
You are the guest who waits inside
You are the stranger at the door
You are the calling of the poor
You are my Lord and with me from ill
You are the light, the truth, the way
You are my Savior this very day.
Celtic praise

Joy is the grace we say to God.
Socrates

O my Father, Great Elder,
I have no words to thank You,
But with Your deep wisdom
I am sure that You can see
How I value Your glorious gifts.
Kikuyu Blessing, Kenya

Bless our food, O Lord.
