Andrew Thomason 1953 - 2007

Andrew Thomason was born in Buckinghamshire in 1953. In 1976 he graduated with a degree in painting from Winchester School of Art. Although he exhibited briefly in Cork Street (at the centre of London's fine art trade) and in many small group exhibitions in the late 1970s and 1980s, he never seriously troubled the wider art world. When he died, in 2007 of lung cancer at the age of 53, he left a substantial body of unexhibited paintings and drawings.

Rooted in an understanding of European modernist painting, and informed by an appreciation of British painters such as Roger Hilton and Peter Lanyon, Andrew Thomason's paintings engage with the themes of personal identity, anxiety, isolation and despair, that were central to much of 20th century art, but with a humour, intensity, and a graphic and painterly fluency, that is unique.

Andrew's work is perhaps best approached via his improvisations on the HUMAN FACE, mostly made in the mid 1980s, or through his depictions of ANIMALS which are always empathetic and often strongly anthropomorphic. This site also contains a selection of other PAINTINGS and a section devoted to his DRAWINGS. There are also pages containing WRITING including appreciations of Andrew, PHOTOGRAPHS of and by Andrew and a short BIOGRAPHY.

Andrew Thomason was also an accomplished amateur musician and this site contains some of his MUSIC.
