How do I work?

I like to work in an integrative, person-centred way. This means that I don’t approach your situation with pre-set ideas but prefer to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space in which we can explore together what is going on in your life. Through this a better understanding of that situation may emerge that will enable you to deal better with problems as they arise.
My work tends to focus on relationships. It seeks to help you to discover more about your own relationships and ways in which adopting a different approach to them can help you to live a less restricted and more fulfilled life.
Working with AS Carers two areas often come up:

  • The painful issue of dealing with what one of my previous clients has termed “the life sentence” of Aspergers.
  • The terrible feelings of guilt and responsibility that many carers feel with the regard to the person they care for and that they are somehow to blame for the situation.

Our work together will focus on ways of being able to confront, accept and deal with these issues should this be what you need to do.
Our work together centres on you and your needs – not just as a carer but as a person. It does not focus on any idea of mine. It is my job to respond to what you want to get out of the counselling. From time to time I may challenge things you say but generally in order for us both to understand better what is going on in your life.

How often do we meet?

Typically, sessions are weekly and last for 50 minutes, however given the difficulties that often arise from the AS Carer role I understand that great flexibility is required in booking sessions.
