CV Builder Tips

Your CV is your ultimate marketing tool; your means of demonstrating that you have what it takes to fulfil the requirements of a particular role in order to secure an interview.

Good content and attractive appearance are essential; clients do not have the time to search through a CV to find what they are looking for rather a quick glance over the CV as a whole will determine whether it warrants further investigation or immediate disposal.

Requirements of a good CV:

Appropriate Length

Most CVs are no longer than 3 pages and ideally 2. Anything over 4 is likely to be put on the ‘no’ pile, too much bother to read.

Effective Profile

A thoughtfully prepared opening profile of 4 to 5 lines promoting your character, skills and capabilities targeted at the specific job requirements is very useful in capturing attention and provides a recruiter with a good reason to read on.

Readability

A quick glance at your CV should be all it takes to identify relevant information which should be specific, focused and factual:

  • Bullet point skills and key achievements quantifying impact on the business.
  • Summarise employment history in reverse chronological order (dates in order with most recent first).
  • Do not attempt to hide any gaps but do explain them.

Attractive appearance

Do not let bad formatting and spelling mistakes distract from the content of your CV. Refrain from using a variety of fonts and font sizes, excessive underlining, bold and italics and cluttering information with little white space.

Relevance

It is vital that you have a thorough understanding of your skills, knowledge, experience and achievements and that you tailor your CV to match your attributes to the requirements of each role you apply for. The closer the match you present the better your prospects of an interview.
