Anaerobic Workshop

Anaerobic Bacteriology Workshops

In today’s laboratory environment, cost effectiveness is now a common goal. How can microbiology laboratories apply cost-effective measures to anaerobic cultures? This seminar will answer that question as well as discuss simple and proven methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria.

The workshop will consist of 3.5 hours of lecture and 2.5 hours of practical exam. This workshop is a “dry” non-laboratory lecture and discussion. The lecture will cover oxygen toxicity, types of anaerobic infections, and the organisms most frequently involved in those infections. The techniques that will be covered include specimen collection & transport, primary isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing. The practical exam will present fourteen unknown organisms for identification using rapid, inexpensive, and reliable procedures.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the mechanism of oxygen toxicity, which is harmful to anaerobes.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various systems that provide anaerobic conditions.
  • Recognize minimum requirements for the successful collection & transport of anaerobic specimens.
  • Identify the best media for the growth and isolation of anaerobic bacteria.
  • Apply and interpret rapid spot tests for the identification of anaerobes.
  • Identify the most common anaerobes in clinical specimens.

California residents may earn 6 continuing education (CE) contact hours for attending this workshop. Other states may also provide credit. Please refer to your CLS licensing board for more information.

Hosting a Workshop

Would you like to host a workshop at your hospital or institution? We are continually seeking out organizations to host the workshop. Anaerobe Systems will conduct the workshop and fill it with attendees. The host only needs to provide the room/facilities and help make arrangements for food. As a host, your lab may send 5 attendees free of charge and an unlimited number of CLS students currently rotating through your institution.
