History
Atelier One was founded by Neil Thomas in 1989. Neil Thomas and Aran Chadwick are the directors of the firm. In 1992 Aran Chadwick joined the firm and in 1997 became director of Atelier One. The firm is based in London, UK and it is described in the Architectural Association School of Architecture as “the most innovative engineering practice in the UK.” [1] Atelier One works closely with the Environmental Engineering firm Atelier Ten which was founded by Patrick Bellew, who also worked at Atelier One. The firm has worked on diverse projects ranging from art galleries and performance halls to residences and bridges, as well as sculpture, and stage sets for U2, Metallica, the Rolling Stones.[2] The Singapore Arts Center was one of the early works that gave Atelier One an international reputation of specializing in challenging projects. The Singapore Art Center took 9 years to be completed but in the long run, it earned the Singapore Architecture Award in 2003. Another early project ‘House’ from 1993 won the Turner Prize. The Cultural Center in Melbourne, Australia won both the Australian Architects Prize and the Australian Engineering Excellence Award in 2003.[3] Recent projects that are in the construction phase are the Ljubljana Sports Park (to be finished in June 2010) and the Singapore Gardens by the Bay Phase I (to be finished in 2011). Some important people are Patrick Bellew who worked in several projects with Atelier One and then founded Atelier Ten an Environmental Engineering Firm, Alan Brookes, Julia King, Aran Chadwick, Mark Fisher, and many more artists, architects and designers.[4]
