Being at work shouldn't be just about work. It should be fun
as well (as far as possible). For me, my job at Imperial isn't
"just a job". In addition to my role I'm the deputy-chair for
Able@Imperial (it's a staff network designed to support
disabled staff and staff with disabled dependants) and I was a
finance rep on the Support Services Social Committee. The
Social Committe has organised a Village Fete (i.e. a party for
over 1,000 support staff!) to celebrate Imperial's
independence from the University of London. This event has now
turned into an annual event and in 2014, as part of the Fete,
we organised a Mad Hatter competition. If you would like to
see the photos of my hat, please click here:
I'm a great believer in education (which you can
probably tell just by looking at my CV), but in addition to
studying for qualifications myself I also helped other
Imperial staff by organising lunch-time study groups to help
us get through our exams (it was a mixed-ability group to
allow those who were doing higher level exams to help those
who were just beginning their accountancy studies), mentored
trainees, attended a leadership programme (Calibre, as per
above), taught finance concepts to non-finance staff during
the course of my job, as well as implementing a CPD training
programme for all finance staff at Imperial.
Also, in 2014 I finally started to learn British Sign Language
(BSL), which I always wanted to learn and now I finally have
spare time for. So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed it!
Accountants and paralegals must maintain
confidentiality at all times!
