COMMUNITY BABOON SANCTUARY
No visit to Belize would be complete without visiting the Community Baboon Sanctuary. The C.B.S. was founded in 1985 and consists of eight neighboring villages which have all voluntarily pledged to conserve the natural habitat of the Black Howler Monkey (locally called Baboons) by following a few conservation steps to ensure the mutual harmonic coexistence of man and monkey in this region. This sanctuary is the only of its kind in the world and is considered by scientists, researchers and conservation groups to be a model of land stewardship and conservation for the rest of the world to follow.

A Natural History Museum sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County and managed by the C.B.S. is located only 400 yards away from the lodge. We highly recommend a visit to the museum and to go on the C.B.S. Nature Walk. Guides provided by the Sanctuary have extensive knowledge of the local flora and fauna. We assure you that after your walk you will have a renewed respect and appreciation for nature. A contribution of $5 U.S. per person is mandatory and covers the guide fee as well.

JUNGLE RIVER TRIP
Come join us for our fun outdoor adventure, take in the excitement of our 15KM guided canoe trip along the historic Belize River which takes you downstream through the jungle of the Community Baboon Sanctuary and three villages in the Sanctuary. The C.B.S. is located within the lowland,
broad-leaved forests of North-Central Belize. Most of the Sanctuary is covered with riparian forest which parallel the meandering Belize River. At the river's edge, the forests form dense, luxuriant tangles of trees, vines and epiphytes. The system supports around 100 tree species and scores of
vines, shrubs, epiphytes and herbs.

After putting in at the village of Willows Bank we drift/paddle downstream past the village of Double Head Cabbage and down to Jungle Drift Lodge in the village of Bermudian Landing where a chilled fresh fruit plate awaits you.

On this trip, you will see several troops of Black Howler Monkeys, huge Iguanas and many species of birds. We can teach you about many plants in the rainforest and their uses.

Years of experience guarantees this trip to be fun, safe, educational, exciting and fulfilling. Children are welcome.

Bring along your camera as there are plenty of photo opportunities and time to take them. Bring your swim gear for a refreshing dip. Included; guide, canoe or kayak, equipment transfer to be put in and fresh fruit plate.

Cost: $25 U.S. per person, two-person minimum. This trip is also available as a day trip from Belize City. We can pick you up at your hotel and transfer you to the Jungle Drift Lodge and back to Belize City or you can meet us at the lodge. Please call ahead to make this excursion.

"This one is a big hit with our guests." Probably one of the
most exciting things you might experience in your life.

We put in at Mussell Creek, a 10 minute drive from the Lodge, equipped with canoes, spotlight, life vests and accompanied by an experienced guide we begin our adventure.

With the cool of the night setting in and the mist from the warm water rising up, we stealthily paddle towards these living fossils, our objective, to get as close as possible to them, so close sometimes you could touch them, but a photo is probably a much wiser idea.

With bats flying around and other nocturnal creatures stirring about and fish jumping all around you, some even landing in your canoes, the ambiance of a star-filled sky on a jungle river makes for an exhilarating experience for everyone to enjoy. We are professionals at this and assure all a safe trip. Children are welcome. Cost: $40 U.S. per person, 2-person minimum.

J.D.L. NATURE TRAILS
The Jungle Drift Lodge nature trails are located on 15 acres of our grounds. These trails are well marked and safe to explore on your own. The local and botanical name is depicted on a plaque beside many medicinal plants, hardwood trees, edible plants and renewable plants used for building.
The accompanying booklet gives exciting and informative details on each plant. Additional information is available in our botanical reference library. Birds and monkeys may also be sighted along the trails. A treat for families and individuals.
