“Garfield and Friends,” based on comic strips by Jim Davis, was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. With all due respect to the show’s talented writers and other voice actors, the best thing about the show was Lorenzo Music’s performance as the title tabby. Music’s voice, which somehow always sounded like a yawn, was the perfect fit for a character that spent every waking moment wishing he wasn’t awake. Yes, Garfield would engage in frenzied eating, especially of lasagna, but that was mostly handled with whooshing noises from the sound effects team. Otherwise, Garfield, with Music’s voice, was the personification (cat-ification?) of laziness. more
Most of the time, I think I do a fairly good job at finding ways to reuse items. My youngest grandson, Kolin, is at the fun age of three and full of questions about why he is planting seeds with grandma in yogurt containers or empty egg cartons or the clear plastic container that cookies came in. He is growing up thinking that is a normal occurrence. It is thrifty, I suppose, but I still get a kick out of reusing things that typically end up in the trash and so many of these types of items can’t be recycled, so it is a win/win. more

Rita Lemmon, Assessor of Polk County, announces that the board of equalization will begin meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the office of the Polk County Commission to hear those who disagree with the values of real estate established by the assessor for tax year 2024. The board tentatively plans to conclude the hearings by 12 p.m. on Friday, July 19. more
The Matilda Polk Campbell chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold its last monthly meeting for this chapter year on Saturday, June 15, at Open Hearts United Methodist Church, Bolivar. The meeting will include a potluck luncheon after the opening rituals. Officers for the 2024-2026 term will be installed. more
The Downtown Bolivar Association is now accepting applications for vendors who would like to sign up for a booth space at Country Days. This annual event hosts a variety of organizations and vendors who offer food, entertainment, and other goods. This year, Country Days will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. more
Bolivar Night at the Springfield Cardinals will return on Thursday, June 27, as the Springfield Cardinals face the Arkansas Travelers at 7:05 p.m. Sponsored by the Bolivar Area Chamber of Commerce, the popular annual event has been a chamber tradition since 2004. more

Owen Cornell, son of Jason and Regina Cornell of Bolivar, recently earned a High School Diploma from the National Guild of Piano Teachers, American College of Musicians. This is a prestigious award that can be affixed to his high school transcript, ascertaining he has "by examination shown adequate technical facility and training in Artistic Piano Playing for admission to the Freshman class in colleges, universities, and conservatories of the United States." more
