Terms:-

PLAYING HANDICAP

commonly known as “your handicap”, usually a number between 0 and 28

HOLE HANDICAP
|
the number of handicap strokes you have on a particular hole.

GROSS SCORE on HOLE
|
the number of shots actually played on a hole.

|
NET SCORE on HOLE
|
net score for hole after handicap removed.

STROKE INDEX
|
each hole is allocated a stroke index indicating order of difficulty 1 (hardest) to 18 (easiest) (1 to 9 on 9 hole courses)

Notes:-
Stableford scoring allocates a points score for your NET score on each hole played.
The NET score for a hole is your GROSS score minus your HANDICAP for the hole.
so NET = GROSS – HANDICAP
Your HANDICAP for the hole is :-
1) For playing handicaps of 18 or less then you get 1 shot for each hole of stroke index less than equal to your playing handicap, so if your playing
handicap is 14 then you get 1 shot for stroke index holes 1 to 14 and no shots for 15 to 18.
2) For playing handicaps of 19 to 28 then you get 2 shots for stroke index 1 (playing handicap – 18), then 1 shot on all the rest.
So if your playing handicap is 25 then you get 2 shots on stroke indexes 1 to 7 (25-18)=7 then 1 shot on stroke indexes 8 to 18.
Having worked out your NET score for a hole you can then determine your stableford points for the hole from :-
more than 1 over par: 0
1 over par: 1
par 2 (2 points on 18 holes gives the magic 36 score. par golf)
1 under par: 3
2 under par: 4
3 under par: 5
4 under par: 6
Example:-
A) You score a 7 on a PAR 5 on stroke index 8 off a playing handicap of 21.
A playing handicap of 21 gives you 2 shots on stroke index holes 1 to 3 and 1 shot on 4 to 18 so you only get 1 shot for the hole.
NET = your GROSS score – your HANDICAP means that your score of 7 – 1 = 6.
6 is 1 over par so you get 1 stableford point.
B) You score a 5 on a PAR 4 on stroke index 10 off a playing handicap of 28.
A playing handicap of 28 gives you 2 shots on stroke index holes 1 to 10 and 1 shot on 11 to 18 so you get 2 shots for the hole.
NET = your GROSS score – your HANDICAP means that your score of 5 – 2 = 3
3 is 1 under par so you get 3 stableford points (Go you !!!)
Summary:-
When playing you know from the start which holes you get shots on so when you write down your score on the card you can write GROSS-NET-SCORE like in the
example above 7-6-1 ( 7 for 6 for 1 point). Note that some people say (7 for 1) i.e. they skip out saying the net score.
If you get 2 shots on any holes i.e. you have a playing handicap of 19 or more then circe the holes you get 2 shots on your card before you play as a reminder
A) When you play the hole use your extra shot(s) wisely
B) When you mark your score for a hole, deduct how many shots you get.
