Camping Permits
You need a permit of some kind from someone to do any camping on the island, unless it’s on private land with the owner’s permission. Fortunately, permits are free unless you are staying on a military installation.

My first night was at Bellows Air Force Station. The cost to camp at a site is $8 per night. The sites are right along the beach, and have bathrooms with showers nearby. Reservations can be made in person or by calling (800) 437-2607 or (808) 259 8080 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (-10).
My second night was at a city park. Permits for city park camping are issued in person. Yes, you must show up to an office and apply for the permit in person. They are issued for 3 days at a time. There is no camping from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Friday. That’s right, you have to plan your trip so that you are not planning on staying at a city park on a Wednesday or Thursday night. More information [here]. If you go to the Fort Street Satellite City Hall, make sure you look under the street. That’s right, it is underground. I walked by the stairs going down to it at least twice. The permits are issued on the spot.
My third night was up at Peacock Flats, which was under the jurisdiction of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife. The permit application can be faxed in, and must be applied for at least 10 days prior to your planned camping. Where it asks for license plates, put your bike serial number.

My family and I just came back from Hawaii. Oh how I wish we went camping. It looks like so much fun being surrounded by the beautiful waters of Hawaii! I’ll make sure I don’t forget to get a permit before we go for our next trip.
