Custard Factory S P A C E Foundation The Custard Factory - Private sector entrepreneurs willing to invest in inner city areas are rare and usually colourful figures. When Bennie Gray, owner of the Canning Factory, Gray=s Antique and Alfie=s Antiques Hypermarket in London, visited Birmingham for the first time, its image was dreary and dull. As part of the high-profile Highbury Initiative, Bennie was drawn in to the remarkable project of remaking the city centre. He bought the enormous complex of Bird’s old custard making factory in Digbeth and set about the task of regenerating it. The project proved difficult in Birmingham’s struggling economy. Rents were low and investment would not create a return. Bennie allowed artists to take space for free while he worked out a strategy. Cooper Simms joined Bennie Gray in those early days and negotiated the first grant of £800,000 in 1991 which allowed Scott House, an old flatted factory, to be turned into 300 new work spaces. These soon filled up with entrepreneurial individuals and small companies in media and the creative industries. The project was immensely successful, winning numerous urban regeneration awards. The concept grew and an ambitious ten-stage plan to develop the whole complex with £30m of investment was created. Although Birmingham was on the up and the Custard Factory was a hive of activity, finance was still fraught. A new public space (Custard Court) and brand new building (The Greenhouse) was part of the plan. Cooper Simms put together bids for European Funds, Lottery Funds and English Partnerships Investment Fund monies. Nearly £2.5m in grant was attracted by these bids and construction is now underway. 1991-94 F D West Midlands
