Full-Season General Internship: February – September 2010

These internships are on a rotating schedule with each intern working an equal amount of time in all four departments: ticketing, promotions, marketing/media and stadium operations. Responsibilities while in each department include, but are not limited to, the criteria listed below. All interns (except for concessions) will also spend time selling ticket packages over the phone to gain sales experience.

Ticketing Department:

  • Becoming familiar with the ticket system used by the Smokies
  • Filling ticket orders over the phone, Internet, and in-person
  • Assisting with season-ticket holder mailers, events and issues
  • Assisting in training and supervision of the game day ticket office staff
  • Basic customer service related to ticket issues
  • Various other duties related to working in a ticket office

Promotions Department:

  • Assist in mascot and other public appearances in the community
  • Assist in running Fan Assistance area during games
  • Assisting with the Smokies Summer Reading Program
  • Assisting with all Kids Club activities and newsletters
  • Various other duties related to community relations and game day promotions

Stadium Operations Department:

  • Pre-season concentration on cleaning and preparing the stadium for the season to begin
  • Assist in supervising the cleaning crew during and after games
  • Various other duties related to maintaining and operating a facility

Marketing/Media Department:

  • Assisting in preparing stats and information for press releases
  • Assisting in scheduling and supervising the press box during games
  • Compiling and delivering stats and reports to coaches and media personnel
  • Assisting in creation/development of content for team Web site
  • Assisting in running of team’s social media pages

Hamilton Joes Baseball Club (Posted October 21st)

POSITION:        Assistant General Manager

REPORTS TO:  General Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Assistant GM has the responsibly of assisting the General Manager of the Hamilton Joes in various capacities. The primary focus of this position is heading up the Joes Intern Program. The AGM must display writing skills, public speaking capabilities, leadership, and enthusiasm, be detail oriented, have integrity and, above all, stay focused so as to complete the job functions on time and in a commendable way. This is a full-time position starting April 1 and concluding in mid-August.

SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS:

A.  Assist the GM in obtaining participation in “Special Events”. A “Special Event” consists of a business or organization having a special day for their employees/staff at the ballpark, recognizing the group over the PA and allowing one of them to throw out the first pitch. In addition, the AGM will take an important part in the Joes by making public appearances.

B.  Prepare biographical sketches and pictures on each of the Joes 30+ players and coaches to place on the Joes website and game day program. This project must be started and completed in the second quarter of each year.

C.  Recruit college students to fulfill the following volunteer positions:

On-Field Personalities (3), Sports Writers (2) Back-up PA Announcer (1)  Back-up Electronic score-keeper(1). From this group, one of them will function as a Scoreboard Operator.

Organize, train and supervise the interns in the specifics of their respective jobs:

On-Field Personalities:  To obtain fans to volunteer to participate in games and win prizes. These events are generally held between innings.

Sports writers will prepare articles that can be published in the following: Game Day Programs, web-sites of the Great Lakes League, Butler County Visitors Bureau and the Joes. Submit brief articles and stats to the Hamilton-Journal on away games and on those game days that a Journal writer is not available.

Scoreboard operator: One of the six interns will be designated to perform the Scoreboard Operator functions and another as a back-up.

Electronic score-keeper: At this time, the Joes have secured the services of an experienced electronic score-keeper. An intern will be trained to perform the electronic score-keeping functions should the primary operator not be available.

Have the interns report to you one hour before each home game to assist in putting up banners, cleaning the stands, setting up various equipment, such as microphones on-field promotion equipment and banners, securing fencing and preparing themselves for their own individual assignments. After the game, have the interns clean-up their own area, take down banners and put equipment away.

Have the interns participate in extracurricular activities such as the Nuxhall Character Education Program, Fourth of July Parade and fund raisers.

As their supervisor, communication is a key. Always make sure that the interns know their assignments, understand what is expected of them and report to you any necessary absence. Once the season is complete, prepare and issue letters of appreciation for their participation. Should we have a recognition day for interns at the ballpark, please prepare an appropriate certificate to recognize their efforts.

Following are some details regarding participation in a spring training internship with the Florida Operations Department of the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club in Bradenton, Florida.

In order to gain a full understanding/appreciation of what is required to operate a spring training facility/minor league complex on a daily basis and in particular during events, the intern may potentially assist with and/or observe daily activities in any area of Florida Operations as needed.  The primary focus of the internship will be in ticketing and stadium operations but also may include, but may not be limited to:

  • Assist the Manager of Florida Operations in various tasks

Trinity Christian College (Posted October 9th)

Trinity Christian College is seeking an intern to be part of our track and field coaching staff for the 2009-10 academic year. The intern will be expected to work 20-25 hours per week and preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the throwing events. A stipend of $800/month is provided, plus the opportunity for reduced-cost housing in campus apartments. Starting date is negotiable.

A bachelor’s degree is required. Competition experience on the high school and college level is also desired. Any previous coaching experience is a plus. Candidates must support the goals, beliefs and expectations of Trinity Christian College and be able to articulate a mature Christian faith.

James Madison University (Posted October 9th)

James Madison University, a Division I member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association is seeking an Equipment Room Graduate Athletic Assistant for the 2010 Spring semester and is renewable for the 2010-11 academic year. A tuition waiver is available for the 2010 Spring semester including up to 9 graduate credits. An assistantship stipend in the amount of approximately $4,300 will also be provided. Assistantship dates will run approximately from January 10, 2010 – May 9, 2010 and may be renewed for the 2010-2011 academic year. Responsibilities include assisting the Director of Equipment Services with the equipment operations for 13 varsity sport programs. The Graduate Athletic Assistant will assist with keeping tracking of all inventory through the SportSoft inventory system; oversight of night and weekend laundry operations; ensuring purchase orders are properly filled; maintaining an organized and clean equipment room; delivering packages to coaches and athletic staff; assisting with one-on-one meetings with coaches to ensure proper equipment is dispersed to student-athletes; creating and updating various Excel spreadsheets. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, CAA, NCAA regulations.

Bachelor degree required. Previous experience in collegiate equipment operations and AEMA certification is beneficial. The Department of Athletics at University of Arkansas at Monticello, a Division II member of the Gulf South Conference, has a Head Coach/Graduate Assistant Position available in the sport of Men’s and Women’s Golf. All applicants must be eligible for an approved graduate program at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) or the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). Description: The Graduate Assistant (GA) Strength and Conditioning Coach reports to the Head and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coaches and assists in all aspects of Northwestern University’s men’s and woman’s athletic performance programs. This position is a 17-month appointment beginning January 4, 2010 and ending June 15, 2011. Acceptance into a graduate program at Northwestern University is required. The GA must enroll in at least one course per quarter including summer quarter. A tuition waiver is provided and will cover up to six courses per year. A monthly stipend is provided in the amount of $1,045 per month. This position does not provide benefits.

Responsibilities: Assist in all aspects of Northwestern University’s men’s and woman’s athletic performance programs, including but not limited to warm ups, flexibility training, strength and speed training, conditioning and athlete assessments; Responsible for strength and conditioning programs which elicit safe and correct execution of exercise technique; Effectively communicate with athletic trainers and coaches on exercise protocol; Other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an exercise science related field; Strong desire to pursue a career in athletic performance; Membership in NSCA; CSCS certified or actively seeking certification – certification required by appointment start date; Current CPR and First Aid certifications; Previous strength and conditioning coaching experience with collegiate student-athletes; Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University.

American Junior Golf Association (Posted October 1st)

The AJGA is looking for talented and well-rounded applicants to serve as tournament operations and communications interns. The tournament operations and communications internship is an entry-level position and applicants must be at least 20 years old prior to May 18th. The interns will travel extensively throughout the United States during the internship to help conduct national junior golf tournaments. The AJGA hires more than 50 interns between our spring and summer internships to help the full-time staff conduct more than 80 events throughout the year.

The intern will assist the Cal Athletics Travel Department and will support all aspects of Intercollegiate Athletic travel. Individuals will develop skills to help plan and arrange airfare, lodging, and transportation for team travel, coaches’ recruiting trips, prospective student athletes’ official visits to campus and staff travel. The intern will also learn how to enforce cost containment strategies, aid assistant coaches in maintaining their travel budgets and reconcile all expenses and invoices associated with travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Travel Arrangements A. Assist with all travel arrangements for the Athletic Department. This includes team travel (27 Intercollegiate teams), recruiting (100 coaches traveling year-round throughout the world), visiting prospective student athletes, staff and local travel. 1. Begin to research and negotiate the terms/conditions/rates for team travel accommodations with outside vendors for team hotels, meal functions, and ground transportation. 2. Help secure, review and process contracts and direct bill applications for hotels and bus companies. 3. Aid in coordinating trip details and updating changes the week of travel. This will include providing hotels with rooming lists, team itineraries, special instructions from the coaches, and confirming flight times and pick-up and drop-off locations and times for ground transportation. 4. Compile Team Travel Packets for each team the week of travel. 5. Work with coaches and budget managers to coordinate upcoming year’s travel. B. Serve as the business office liaison with corporate sponsors in the Travel sector. 1. Drive business to designated corporate sponsors. 2. Track trade usage for accounting purposes. C. Issue and manage department direct bill credit cards. Educate staff on proper use. D. Schedule and manage the Athletic Department’s vans.

Travel Administration A. Assist in preparing and processing all paperwork associated with travel. Ensure compliance with IA Department, University, and NCAA policies, as well as Pac-10 conference rules. 1. Learn and enforce proper procedure for all travel arrangements, including using the correct forms and obtaining proper approval levels. 2. Prepare BFS Purchase orders. 3. Review and process invoices for payment 4. Update various IA department databases in order to track trips, hotel reservations, flight itineraries, etc. 5. Field phone calls made to the Travel Office. 6. Copy, file, and fax Travel Department request forms, contracts, invoices, and purchase orders B. Review requests for travel advances and distribute.

Required: Excellent computer skills. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal. Excellent customer service skills. The ability to problem solve, multi-task, handle and prioritize a heavy workload and perform under pressure. Organized and detail oriented. Able to work 20 hours per week.

Preferred: Completed Bachelor’s degree or fulfilling final credits required to complete Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree or degree candidate preferred. Ideally looking for someone interested in college-level athletics and working in a travel field.

Towson University (Posted August 26th)

The Department of Athletics at Towson University invites applications for three Internships for the 2009-10 academic year. A Bachelor’s degree is required for each position, and the selected candidate will earn a monthly stipend of $1500 for 10 months based on an hourly rate. The dates of employment for each position are flexible and determined by immediate supervisor. Equipment Management Intern (#CN-100242-09)
Reporting to the Head Equipment Manager, the Intern’s duties include providing assistance to the management of the Equipment Rooms, inventory, team uniform issuing and receiving, storage, laundry, game operations and minor repairs of equipment and other duties as assigned by the Equipment Manager.

Facilities & Event Management Intern (#CN-100243-09)
Reporting to the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Event Management, the Intern will assist with the management of all indoor and outdoor athletic facilities; may have direct responsibility for the management of field hockey, swimming and diving, and baseball game operations; provide assistance for football and men’s basketball game operations; manage athletic department property control records; make schedule updates to the athletics master calendar; develop and update a visitor’s guide for athletic events; manage assigned building and maintenance projects; and perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director.

Video Services Intern (#CN-100244-09)
Reporting to the Coordinator of Video Services, the Intern will assist with the management and operations of the video support area including video capture and editing for various sports using various systems; schedule camera operators for selected practice and/or competitions; be a communication point for selected coaches; assist in the creation of team end of year videos; and perform other duties as assigned by the Coordinator.
