1812 War Records

The United States declared WAR on Great Britain on June 12, 1812, and the battles were fought at sea and on the North American Continent until 1815. The battle of Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write the words to The Star-Spangled Banner. During the War of 1812, there were 15 states in the Union....the most recent being Vermont and Kentucky.

"Lewis Taylor Sandifer, Bounty Land Warrant, Kentucky Service. The papers for this soldier are in a jacket designated as James T. Sandifer. Either there is a soldier of the name of James T. Sandifer or the above application was right for L. T. Sandifer and should have been so designated on the jacket.

L. T. Sandifer, 51 years old, resident of Willow Spring, Rock County, Wisconsin, about 1856, appliced for bounty lands (perhaps about 1850); was pvt. in Capt. Robert B. McAfee's company, Col. R. M. Johnson's Kentucky Militia; volunteered at Harrodsburgh, Kentucky. Lewis Sandifer, 64 years old, 1856, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, gave same service and applied for additional bounty lands under the Act of 3 March 1855 had received 80 acres under Wt. 14898; gave same service except he volunteered May 20, 1813 and serfed to November 20, 1813; his signature was attested by Maria Sandifer, Fayette County, Wisconsin.

J. B. Gay, Snullsbur, Lafayette County, Wisconsin certified that the soldier's full name was Lewis Taylor Sandifer.

He was admitted to bounty lands by Wt. 22929, December 9, 1850. (*note: there are a number of numbers on the papers and it is difficult to tell what the actual warrant number was. Apparently Wt. 8299 for 80 acres was issued under Act of 1855 to a James T. Sandifer, so there must have been two men.)"

John Sandefur, Bennett Sandefur Sr.'s oldest son, performed service up the Wabash River in September and October of 1812 with the 1st Regimnet, Caldwell's Mounted Kentucky Volunteers commanded by Major General Samuel Hopkins.

Standeford, John - SO 968 SC 435; private in Capt. Isaac Watkins' company, Kentucky Militia. Residence: Putnam County, IN - Greencastle, 14 Feb. 1871. Enlisted 20 September 1814; discharged 20 November 1814. Soldier, age 75, living in Greencastle, Indiana 9 March 1871, declared that he was a widower, wife's name was Hannah C. Collier, to whom he was married in Shelby County, Kentucky on 5 November 1818, and she died at Greencastle, Indiana on 1 September 1869. During War of 1812 he proceeded to Canada, was in Battle of Malcolm's Mills and was honorably discharged. Admitted to pension of $8 per month 22 June 1871. Soldier living at Lawrenceburg, Kentucky in 1882. Special Examiner Rodney Clipp, Department of Interior Pension Office, Indianapolish, Ind., inquired 24 April 1886 as to whether Standeford was living or dead. Postmast replied he died several years before.)

James Standifer, Sr.. On September 30, 1813, he was enlisted as a Captain in the War of 1812 and served until December 30, 1813. He re-enlisted on January 20, 1814 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel serving under Colonel John Brown in the East Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen.
