Al di Meola's Speak a Volcano: Return to Electric Guitar is a stunning work that will amaze, a perfectly filmed concert of perfect music. In this setting one wonders why the highly respected musician hasn't achieved success on the level of a Carlos Santana, because his phrasing and soulful mastery of the instrument are just so compelling and easy to absorb. "San Marco" is both eerie and liquid exciting, drummer Joel Taylor expressing a nice foundation for the guitarist to glide over. Bassist Mike Pope adds a contained and productive balance as they dip into the fusion world conjured up by the ten-plus-minute "One Night Last June." The music has staying power even away from the dark textures of the film recorded in November 2006 at Leverkusen, produced and directed by Peter Sommer. "Azzura" mellows things out, while Chick Corea's "Señor Mouse" is that subtle volcanic eruption the title refers to. Bonus tracks include "Al's Guitar Tips" and a nice conversation with the maestro. A very, very nice project, Speak a Volcano will appeal to a variety of listeners. Despite di Meola's pristine reputation, the DVD proves he is underrated and deserving of much more recognition on the world stage. (All Music Guide - Joe Viglione)
