Lancaster band Caned Unable started playing together in July 1999. The original line-up consisted of the three Perkins brothers, Aaron, Johan and Sol, who were joined by drummer Dave Hale. Sol and Dave stayed with the band for two years, both leaving in June 2001 because of other committments. Dave was replaced by Kyle Oram, who first appeared with them on stage June 29th at their second Roadhouse gig, with Sean standing in for Sol until a permanent replacement could be found. Rob Porter took over on bass at the beginning of September 2001. In November 2001, the line up was increased to five with the addition of cellist Katy Davis. When the band played at the Fieldtrip Festival in August 2002, Johan was away in Spain. Temporarily replacing him on lead guitar were Rob Holden (for "The Circadian Rhythm" and "Taking Me Under"), and Will Locke (for the other numbers). Katy left in October 2002. The last of the Caned Unable gigs she played was at The Bobbin, September 5th, but Katy contributed to the Zen Panic Demo released the following year, playing cello on "Eggshells" and "Shout At Me (I Need You)" In October 2003, Rob left the band. For the 15th November gig at The Byers, Ewan stood in for him. The band decided to carry on as a three-piece with Aaron playing bass. The band did a few gigs at the start of 2004, but there followed an extended summer break, and individual interests began to take precedence. In December 2004, the death of Sher, mother of Aaron, Johan and ex-bass player Sol, robbed the band of their greatest fan. She attended most of their local gigs and provided support on many levels. |

Sound engineer Jim Graham started working with the band in December 2001. Laura Newton acted as the group's manager from June 2002 to March 2003, leaving because of other work committments. Mia Jackson began helping out with admin support in February 2003, and took over as manager in April 2003, with Joe Beswick joining her as co-manager in May 2003. This lasted 3 months, until August 2003, when Aaron took on the role. |
