EXPERIENCE

    June 2004 - Present
    Weyerhaeuser Company
33663 Weyerhaeuser Way South, Federal Way, WA 98003

    Lead Developer, Online Learning

I have acted as lead or sole developer of over 70 eLearning courses for Weyerhaeuser, the vast majority delivered via Flash-based XML "players" that I have developed. The latest, Weyerhaeuser Training Player 2.0, was developed entirely in ActionScript 3.0. It allows for both the skin/shell of the player and individual scenes to be controlled by XML, supports HD video playback (MP4s), and is largely SCORM 1.2 and 2004 compliant, working together with a SCORM JavaScript Wrapper I developed to track user progress in the company-wide proprietary LMS, Training Coordination (which is built on a BMC Remedy platform and, since 2009 and the departure of the Remedy developer who built it, has also been my responsibility, requiring me to act as company LMS Administrator and acquire Remedy Programming skills. We have since moved to Absorb LMS, which I have also administered). To date, 18 courses have been developed for the player (some in multiple languages), and I have been responsible for the vast majority of the development work required for each course (creating graphics, editing audio and video, and creating the XML), as well as the development and maintenance/improvement of the player itself. I have also contributed to the instructional design of a number of these courses, including needs analysis, SME liaison, and writing. Please find below a selection of these training courses (these links open a copy of the training).

I developed the original Weyerhaeuser Training Player in 2005-2006, in ActionScript 2.0, in order to allow the company's Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) department to put over 50 core trainings online. As well as designing and developing the application, and adding functionality and fixing bugs throughout the years 2005 to 2010, from 2006 to 2009 I led the five-strong team of developers charged with creating the courses played back through the player: assigning XML, image, audio, and SWF creation to those best suited to the task, and overseeing their work. Since 2009, and the shrinking of the training team to two, I have carried out a lot of these tasks myself. Between 2005 and 2010, I led the development of over 45 EHS and other training courses designed for playback through this original player, before its eventual replacement. Please find below a small selection of these training courses (these links open a copy of the training).

I also developed downloadable versions of each of these trainings, for offline and/or non-tracked usage. You can download an example here.

During this period I have also worked on a number of other eLearning courses for Weyerhaeuser, either in Flash/ActionScript 2.0 (such as Ethical Dilemmas, or the Antitrust Workshop) or using tools such as Articulate Presenter, Adobe Captivate, or Articulate Storyline. EHS Training for New Managers and, in particular, Ethics 2010 Training, are examples of Articulate/Flash projects I have developed. The former uses a Flash shell to load Articulate-generated SWFs; the latter is a course built in Articulate but using a Flash plug-in I developed to replace the program's built-in navigation. Antitrust and Canadian Competition Law Training, Management of Change Training, and Formaldehyde Safety Training are all examples of courses developed in Storyline.

I have also maintained my web design/development skills over this period, building various web sites in Flash and/or ASP.NET, including the Jerry Hosier, Tveit & Tornoe, and Paul Slusher sites. Over the last few years I was given the opportunity to work on www.weyerhaeuser.com, including incorporating the Innovation section of the site into the larger web site, amongst other responsibilities.

Finally, from 2006 to 2009 I studied for a Masters in Computer Science, eventually awarded with Distinction. You can read more about this here.

    June 2003 - April 2004
Microsoft Games Studios (on assignment from Volt Technical Services)
18700 NE Union Hill Road, Redmond, WA 98052

    Flash Developer

Working within one of the Sports Games studios in the XBox division, my brief while working for Microsoft was to develop a Flash MX/ASP-driven prototyping tool, running off an MS Access back-end. The result, termed QUIP (Quick UI Prototypes), was a Flash tool capable of mocking-up the studio's games' non-playing screens, with the copy (where applicable), positioning, and behavior of the various screen elements entirely updatable by changing values in the Access database (or in a WYSIWYG manner through the Flash interface itself) rather than altering any ActionScript or ASP code. As a result, Microsoft game (and other) designers could move the various screen elements around, and judge user and tester reactions, before development of the game has progressed too far for changes to be practicable. Users could navigate through the screens using either their PC keyboard or, as the program was really designed for, an XBox Controller attached to a PC via the USB port. The system also tracked user actions; this enabled designers to better understand the different paths gamers followed while navigating through the myriad non-playing screens, and to respond accordingly.

Initially six months long, my contract was extended to nine months in order for me to play a part in the designing of a new XSN Sports web site. This involved creating an interactive mock-up, designed to reflect the proposed functionality and layout of the planned web site. Finally, in addition to the above, I also worked on an interactive CD-ROM for Medtronic Inc. during this period. For more information on these projects, please click on one of the links below:

    April 2002 - March 2003
    pushMEDIA
    4 Eglinton Crescent, Edinburgh

    Development Partner

A colleague and I decided to form pushMEDIA in April 2002 following the liquidation of our former employer, and succeeded in relocating all their client web sites in the space of a week (we were given only seven days notice of the impending closure) and with no down time. This included a number of very large sites, built for such clients as Glenmorangie Plc. and Highland Spring Water Ltd. My colleague and I then maintained the majority of these client sites and built a number of new ones. Running my own business, of course, entailed the further development of my project management and project planning/costing skills, and required a considerable degree of self-motivation and self-discipline. It also entailed more creative input from me (I designed all the sites we built, created our wireframes and site maps, and wrote all our proposal documents), I improved my ASP/VBScript skills substantially (particularly as regards Content Management Systems, Access/SQL), and I refreshed my Perl skills. I also increased my familiarity with MySQL, XHTML, and XML/XSLT. Examples of sites/projects that I developed and/or worked on during this period include:

    Saint Property web site
    Urban Design Futures web site
Highland Spring Vending Flash/HTML web site
    proof-reader.com web site
    Business Law Consultancy web site
Content Management System Demo (based upon Urban Design Futures site, above)
Preston Lodge Rugby Football Club web site
    pushMEDIA web site

    April 1999 - March 2002
    The Assembly Creative
25 Silvermills Court, Henderson Place Lane, Edinburgh

Interactive Developer (then, Copywriter and New Media Programmer)

While employed by The Assembly, I worked on a variety of web sites and projects, including sites for Glenmorangie Plc., Highland Spring Water Ltd., and The Royal Bank of Scotland, and further improved my HTML, JavaScript, Perl, Macromedia Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and ASP/VBScript skills.

Examples of sites/projects for which I acted as sole or lead developer during this period include:

Royal Bank of Scotland Mobile Banking demo
    Search Recruitment Flash Xmas Card
Assembly Promo CD-ROM Flash Intro Sequence
    Highland Spring Water web site
Royal Bank of Scotland Discount Mortgages micro-site
Sundial Properties' Dean Street Flash web site
Sundial Properties' Auction House Flash web site
Curtis Malts Fine Papers Flash micro-site
Vestech IT Annual General Meeting Flash 'backdrop'
    Intelli Finance Flash Xmas Card
    Incovo web site
Royal Bank of Scotland Digital Banking demo
    SEEL web site
    Us Creative web site

I also worked on The List magazine's web site, at http://www.list.co.uk, and on http://www.hotelconnexions.co.uk (maintenance/additions). Finally, I put together a Flash CD-ROM for a proposal put to the Wee Stories Theatre. This CD-ROM was put together in a total of 12 hours (all coding/programming and graphics preparation).

I was often involved in project planning meetings and the drawing-up of costs and time-scales, which ensured that I became comfortable facing clients and gained experience of the entire project life cycle. I would also create wireframes and site maps as required. In addition, The Assembly owned a small web design/development agency in St Petersburg, Russia, with which I often had to liaise. As a result, I gained a significant degree of project management experience during my time at The Assembly. In December 2001, when I became the only programmer kept on by the company, I found myself solely responsible for the maintenance of the company's web sites. I was also involved in the offline side of the business, contributing to direct mail and advertising campaigns and pitches in a creative and copywriting capacity (for example, by writing all proposal documents), and copy-editing and proofreading all output, both online and offline.

    September 1996 - March 1999
    38 Canaan Lane, Morningside, Edinburgh

    Editor

As well as copy-editing for Cameron May Ltd., a legal and international trade publisher in London (I edited and/or proofread a range of their publications, including 'The Dragon Awakens: China's Long March To Geneva', and the 2000-page 'The Sanctions Reports'), I assisted a number of corporate clients with the editing of their training manuals, publications, newsletters, and, most relevantly, web sites, including those of Ernst & Young Middle East, based in Bahrain. I entirely redeveloped E&Y ME's web site. In addition, I edited numerous PhD. theses for students at universities in the U.S. and the U.K., tackling a wide range of subjects and often working to extremely tight deadlines.
