CBS stands for Clearing Bank Standard, a reference to paper specifications defined by the clearing banks to ensure that the printed forms can process through automatic document feeders. This is a world wide standard. Almost every African country has now adopted the use of this paper.

CBS1 (Clearing Banks Specification 1) must be a 95gsm paper and of a determined rigidity, surface smoothness, fold and strength characteristics.
This paper is also available as a watermarked paper for extra protection against duplication, scanning and colour copying. Some African countries have made the use of watermarked paper mandatory such as Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, and Nigeria etc.

This paper will enable banks in the feature to automate several processes such as scanning and reading information off the cheque. To be used in any or cheque / debit forms, Chemically treated to highlight the use of any chemicals or solvents.

With the current specifications For example (Within the Seychelles no bank could ever automate any process as all the equipment used in the process work on 95gsm CBS1 paper.)

A common paper throughout the country would enable all banks to read each other’s paper. A small desktop unit can read and scan 100 cheques in less than three minutes. It can be made to store the images and provide a list of the documents paid in that day. It can sort into different banks automatically and provide a list of cheques paid in from each banks.

The CBS 1 paper is a white paper, which can be printed with the client banks requirement as a base. It would have a UV background design and one other ink preferably fugitive ink, (reactive to water based solvents). There is available a combi fugitive ink that is a combination of solvent sensitive and fugitive ink.

This process requires expensive specialist equipment and because of the volumes circulating in Seychelles, it would not be cost justified. However the volume in other African countries would be cost effective.

Banks, as per their corporate requirements, can choose the base colours and designs on the printed cheque paper, which would be done in the UK. The overprinting of the cheques with banks details, clients name and account information, will be done at site.

The cheques leaves will then be bound and delivered to the bank in chequebook form within a day.

The next stage forward in the process would be maybe to apply micr (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) to the cheques, this can be done at any time in the feature with the system. This will enable the next stage of automation to take place
