In the 1950s, four pieces from Prokofiev’s Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet ballets were arranged for clarinet and piano by Bronislav Prorvich, a clarinettist with the Bolshoi Theatre. Strangely, so far as we know, these sparkling arrangements have never previously been recorded. Ian Scott and his producer Malcolm McMillan have added a further 12 movements from the ballets, many of which strongly featured the clarinet in the original orchestral version. This has resulted in a lovely collection of pieces that are at once very familiar but also heard in a completely new light.

“This CD is magnificent, if only for the always surprising twists and atmospheres which Prokofiev derives from his ballet music. The music in combination with the arrangement – because of its great impact of melody and rhythm – remains very strong, so this version will take some beating. ” —Jos Ruiters, De Klarinet

“This is a thoroughly delightful disc. Ian Scott had the idea of replacing the orchestra with the solo instrument and having “the freedom to interpret the ravishing melodies”. In this he has been totally successful alongside accompanist Jonathan Higgins. There is an all-round quality to this issue in every respect. ” —Peter Burt, London Light Music Group

What The Critics Are Saying…

Christopher Guild has a strong background playing Scottish classical music. And that experience informs his playing here…Guild ensures they’re played with the proper phrasing and rhythmic bounce. Charming, witty, and thought-provoking.

” —Ralph Graves, WTJU/Charlottesville Classical

…remarkable sequence of compositions by Michael Finnissy…the programme as a whole is dominated by the arrestingly opulent voice of Lotte Betts-Dean…the persuasive assurance of these performers and their technical assistants is consistently of the highest calibre.

” —Arnold Whittall, Gramophone

As a totality, Honma’s Beethoven cycle… is a strong, meaningful and pianistically always impressive presentation of music…it certainly reflects thoughtfulness and a strong commitment to the music, in addition to very considerable technical skill.

” —Mark J Estren, InfoDad

…ear-catching…The music coruscates and sparkles…The recording is splendid, and the performances are clearly formidable…a dazzling, often moving portrayal

” —John France, MusicWeb International

The Cheltenham College organ sounds on fine form in this clever compilation of both transcriptions and original organ works.

” —Rupert Gough, Choir & Organ

…this is about the scariest collection of tracks we have ever listened to…an impressive display of the power and flexibility of a church organ

” —Jeremy Condliffe, The Chronicle Review Corner

This is a splendid piece of musical archaeology…David Johnson’s work is creative, interesting and satisfying. Christopher Guild has made another major contribution to Scottish classical music.

” —David Barker, MusicWeb International

One can surmise that Honma put a great deal of thought, research and practice time into this project, and her most stimulating interpretations provide food for thought.
