Six DHW NM Scholars Featured in Local News Segment

Six DHW NM Scholars Featured in Local News Segment Six Williams Prep students were among the group of Northwestern Medical Scholars featured in a Fox32 news segment which showcased the NM Scholars Program. The segment highlighted the work that these scholars did durning their 4-week summer intensive at Northwestern Hospital in Downtown Chicago. Williams Prep is currently one of 2 schools sponsored by Northwestern in their NM Scholars Program.

DHW's Own Ira Abrams Recognized for Excellence in Teaching At the May, 2023 Chicago Public School Board Meeting, our very own English Teacher, Ira Abrams (National Board Certified) was one of 4 teachers in the district recognized for Excellence in Teaching. It was truly a proud moment for Mr. Abrams and the entire Williams Prep family. In his acceptance comments, Mr. Abrams recognized the outstanding teamwork of his faculty and staff colleagues as well as the legacy of historian and DuSable alum, Timuel Black who has been a source of inspiration to him throughout his Williams Prep career. Mr Abrams also gave a shout-out to the Modern Classroom teaching philosophy which he champions so effectively at the school. Congratulations to Mr. Abrams on this truly outstanding recognition!

Bronzeville Walking Tour App Featured on CBS-2 News The Bronzeville Walking Tour App that DHW's own Emmonie Jenkins and Shanayia Rule participated in the development of was recently featured on CBS-2 News. The segment included a sound byte from Shanayia sharing her connection to the Bronzeville community. The app will go a long way in showcasing the rich legacy of Bronzeville. Congratulations to Emmonie and Shanayia for this amazing contribution to the community.

Congratulations to Chicago Scholar Recipient Keyanna Hall Williams Prep rising Senior, Keyanna Hall recently became a recipient of the prestigious Chicago Scholars Award. The Chicago Scholars Program selects academically ambitious students who will be first-generation college students in their families. The program makes a 7-year commitment to track and support students from high school, into and through college, and into their first few years of employment after college graduation. The program includes paid summer internship opportunities and career exploration activities. Congratulations Keyanna on this much deserved recognition!
2023 Graduate, Jordan Guy Honored in the 1st Annual Timuel Black Essay Contest

2023 Graduate, Jordan Guy Honored in the 1st Annual Timuel Black Essay Contest DHW's own Jordan Guy was among four recipients honored as winners of the 1st Annual Timuel Black Essay Contest. The contest was developed to help local high school students connect with and reflect upon the life and legacy of longtime educator, activist and historian Timuel Black. The story about the contest along with a brief biography of Timuel Black is provided in the attached "Hyde Park Herald" article. Congratulations Jordan!
Williams Prep Students Accepted into Youth Writers Program

Williams Prep Students Accepted into Youth Writers Program Two of our Williams Prep students have been accepted into the Flowers for the Living Foundation Bronzeville Walk Tour App Youth Writers Program!
Emmonie Jenkins and Shanayia Rule will join a small cohort of Chicago high school students to develop an innovative eyes up-audio-walking tour in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood to showcase the rich history and present through the lens, voice, and sonic scope of Chicago youth.
As part of this creative team, participants will be using their creative writing and narration skills to develop an app that will guide listeners through beautiful Bronzeville. Students will be mentored by museum and creative writing professionals, taken on museum industry field trips, and will receive a stipend for their participation.
