Data Highways Ltd. is a computing consultancy with one full time consultant and access to other consultants and software contractors as needed.

Our Principal, William H.L.Williams, B.Sc(Engineering) began his career as an electronics engineer, switched early to the computing field and has since completed more than 35 years in full scale computing.

Part of that time he worked at a commercial computing bureau, but for most of the time prior to creating this company, he was a senior member of staff at the University of London Computer Centre. This university environment, which involves aspects of both bureau and research work is very stimulating and has gained him experience in a wide variety of fields outside the realms of the commercial programmer analyst.

Before leaving that senior university post to found Data Highways Ltd., Mr Williams had worked extensively in the fields of Compiler Writing, Operating Systems, Computer Networking, Applications Packages, Artificial Intelligence, Systems Testing, Microcomputers and many others. In addition he is an accomplished Committee Chairman, Project Leader and Programming Manager.

Since the creation of Data Highways Ltd in 1980, Mr Williams has performed a variety of tasks including consulting, lecturing, electronic engineering and real-time & industrial programming, business package programming and technical writing. However two major projects show the real extent of his capabilities.

  • For the first project he did the design and implementation of all of 100,000 lines of software and most of the selection and commissioning of the hardware for a 5-computer network. This network performs the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) functions for the 18 test machines used by MK Electric Ltd to assure the quality of their electrical products. The system runs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and incorporates an on-line critical-path scheduler which avoids electrical overloads. He has recently upgraded this whole system to more modern computers.

  • For the second project, Mr Williams did all the design and implementation of 49,000 lines of software and all the selection with most of the commissioning of the hardware for a bespoke SCADA system for a large fruit warehouse. The system monitored 116 temperatures, 19 CO2 levels, 19 relative humidities and 96 switch-states, to perform very accurate control and temperature of 19 cold-rooms. At times there has been as much as £9 million worth of fruit under control of his software.

  • In recent years Mr Williams has also worked closely with several TV script-writers and TV production companies providing computers and computing advice. One significant outcome of this is a set of Templates for Microsoft Word which make it easier for authors to type and layout scripts for Film, Studio, Stage and Radio plays.

Data Highways Ltd offers his expertise as Consultant, Instructor, Designer, Systems Engineer, Software Engineer or Technical Writer in any of the many fields outlined in this brochure. Fees are negotiable in each case, they are based on £60 per hour for normal priority, with reductions for lower priority or for long contracts.
