I don't know about you but I seem to live my life week to week. What I'm doing this week and next is far more pressing than where I will be in six months. With this in mind I designed a calendar based around the week rather than your typical day or month calendar. We're all familiar with swatch sets as a convenient format, with the Swatch Calendar each week fits on a strip and with 53 strips your whole year fits into a compact size, easy to store or keep to hand in your workspace or bag. In this model using the HSB colour space the hue is spread across 53 weeks of the year and different days are different brightness levels of that hue.

After making a week in InDesign I got pretty bored at the prospect of having to do another fifty, not to mention 360+ swatches, and then any inevitable design changes like dimensions or layout. So instead I made the calendar in Processing, which I have been getting to grips with recently.
All the day, date, month information, generation of a colour for each day, typography, layout, are created by the Processing application which then outputs the visuals as large TIF files for printing. Because all the visuals are generated through code alone, it is very easy to change any part of the calendar from colours, typography, layout, style, even dimensions and format of output. By changing a few numbers or letters the colour set can be completely altered, extra information added, fonts changed. This makes the calendar easy to customise for specific purposes and also pretty future proof. Only a couple values will need to be altered to make the calendar ready for 2010.
