Wacom
Announces Intuos 2®
Professional Line of Graphics Tablet Systems in 5 Sizes |
|
|
|
|
Features
Include New Grip Pen, Two New High-Res Cordless Mice,
and New Digital 2X Oversampling Technology
In
a significant makeover of its professional graphics tablet
line, Wacom Technology Corp. today announced the new Intuos2
graphics tablet system incorporating a number of technology
and hardware improvements. Most important of the new features
are: |
|
- a
new cordless, pressure-sensitive Grip Pen
- a
new 2D Mouse for 4x5 and 6x8 active area tablets
- a
new 4D Mouse with fingerwheel for larger tablets
- a
new digital oversampling technology
- a
new menu strip with web navigation short cuts.
|
|
Intuos2
represents an important step forward in the evolution
of state-of-the-art input systems for graphics professionals,
enthusiasts, and digital photographers, said Scott
Rawlings, Wacom marketing director. The ergonomics
of digital tools has caught up and possibly even surpassed
that of conventional photographic, art and desk tools.

Pressure-Sensitive
Grip Pen |
|
Intuos2
introduces the era of the pressure-sensitive Grip Pen.
For the first time, Wacom pens feature a rubber grip area
to make the pen even easier to hold. The design enlarges
the grip area, while a rubber sleeve reduces the grip
pressure required to hold the pen, thus helping to avoid
fatigue when the pen is used for extended periods of time.
The Intuos2 Grip Pen provides 1,024 levels of tip and
eraser pressure, as well as tilt angle and direction information.
The pen also has two side buttons in a single rocker-style
DuoSwitch which can be set to be application-specificmodifier
keys, keystrokes, or mouse buttons. The DuoSwitch also
can be removed for those who dont care for its presence.

New
2D Mouse |
|
For
the first time, all Wacom professional tablets come with
a cordless, battery-free, no-ball mouse. Smaller tablets,
those with an active area of 4" x 5" or 6"
x 8", now include not only the pen but also a 2D
Mouse. This is in response to users who indicated they
preferred using a high-resolution mouse for certain graphics
tasks, such as pixel-accurate path and selection work
or for general menu navigation. The new 2D Mouse has three-button
functionality and a continuously rotating fingerwheel.
Unique patented technology allows the mouse to be wireless,
so there is never a need to untangle cords. The same technology
enables it to work without batteries, so users never have
to worry about consumables running down and needing to
be replaced. Its no-ball design eliminates the need for
cleaning and assures smooth skip-free tracking. |
|
|
|
Improved
4D Mouse |
|
Larger
tablets, those with 9" x 12", 12" x 12",
and 12" x 18" active areas, are bundled with
a new and improved 5-button 4D Mouse. 4D stands for
the four dimensions of information it provides: high-resolution
x and y coordinate data, analog data from an auto-centering
fingerwheel, and compass-like rotation data
when the mouse is turned.
The
new 4D Mouse has been redesigned for better ergonomics
and to more closely emulate a traditional scrolling
mouse. Its high-resolution scroll wheel is no longer
a side thumbwheel but a self-centering fingerwheel on
top of the mouse which provides ± 1024 levels
of data. It continues to provide specialized capabilities
in those applications that support its unique 4D features.
|
|
|
|
New
2X Digital Oversampling |
|
Intuos2
runs at a higher frequency and implements a new digital
over-sampling technique to acquire coordinate data, significantly
improving data quality over previous tablet technology.
As such, Intuos2 devices are not compatible with original
Intuos tablets, nor will original Intuos devices work
on Intuos2 tablets. |
|
|
|
New Web Menu Strip |
|
The
Intuos2 tablet menu strip has been updated to include
commonly used browser tasks. By clicking a menu strip
button, Intuos2 users can go Forwards, Backwards, Refresh,
or Stop. These are in addition to the conventional menu
strip buttons for Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo and other functions.
|
|
|
|
Improved
Driver |
|
The
Intuos2 driver includes updates for the newest operating
systems, including Apples latest OS X release and
Microsoft Windows XP. Driver support for 2D and 4D mice
is enhanced with mouse controls for both acceleration
and speed to allow users to more precisely customize the
feel of mouse navigation. Intuos2 mice also can now work
in safe mode and during computer boot on USB tablets without
a driver installed. As a result, Intuos2 mice have all
the functionality required to replace any existing mice. |

|
Other
Hardware and Technologies |
|
- A
number of original Intuos accessories and innovative
input technologies are carried forward into the Intuos2
product line:
- The
Intuos2 Airbrush, a unique digital airbrush equipped
with not only a pressure-sensitive pen tip for controlling
height but a pressure-sensitive fingerwheel for simultaneously
controlling ink flow. The Intuos2 Airbrush offers
simultaneous control over all six degrees of freedom
(x location, y location, z height [pressure], tilt
angle, tilt direction and ink flow [fingerwheel])
to provide a true digital airbrush, one
that works like a real airbrush with height and ink
flow variables independently controllable at the same
time. The Intuos2 Airbrush is ergonomically designed
to be held between a users thumb and middle
finger. This allows the forefinger to roll a fingerwheel
on top of the airbrush to control ink flow or another
variable such as brush size or opacity. Rolling the
fingerwheel backwards increases ink flow and forward
reduces it.
- The
Intuos2 Lens Cursor, with a unique rotating crosshair
lens for easier viewing in CAD. The Lens Cursors
crosshair lens rotates left or right by up to 50 degrees
for easier viewing in CAD and in technical graphics
applications where precise coordinate position information
is needed.
- Tool
ID. By means of a unique identifying digital
code embedded in all Intuos2 tools, Tool ID allows
a pen or other Intuos tool to be attached to a software
tool. For example, one pen can be personalized for
use as an oil brush, and a second pen can be a pencil,
both with user-set preferences. Accordingly, computer
artists can work as they do in a traditional art environment,
selecting different pens to function as a pencil or
chalk or oilbrush. Another benefit of Tool ID is that
multiple users who share a single workstation can
customize their own input tools, and the workstation
and application will switch automatically to each
users preferences without the need to change
Control Panel settings.
-
DualTrack. This feature enables two input tools
to be used at once: a 4D Mouse can be held in one
hand to orient an object in 3D space while the other
sculpts it with the Intuos2 Pen. The DualTrack feature
is supported by all Intuos2 tablets and all Intuos2
tools except the 2D Mouse. It is used with supporting
software such as Electric Image Amorphium and Synthetik
Studio Artist.
-
QuickPoint. This feature, available on 9"
x 12" and larger tablets, allows for two independent
areas on the tablet, a large one for drawing and a
small area for quick menu navigation. QuickPoint Mode
is selected using a screen Pop-up Menu or a menu strip
function key.
|
|
|
|
Tilt
Sensitivity |
|
All
Intuos2 tablets are tilt and bearing sensitive. A selected
drawing tool responds to the amount of tilt from vertical
as well as to the direction tilt of the pen. |
|
|
|
Bundled
Software |
|
Intuos2
will be bundled with Corel Painter Classic and Wacoms
PenTools 3.0.2. In addition, Adobe® Photoshop®
Elements will be bundled with Intuos2 4" x 5"
and 6" x 8" sizes to enhance their value to
digital photography enthusiasts.
Painter Classic provides a simplified interface to a
powerful program that mimics traditional art media such
as chalk, pens, crayons, oils and airbrush with numerous
paper textures and variations.
PenTools
suite of Photoshop plug-ins include pressure-, tilt-
and eraser-aware brushes such as a Brush-on Noise tool,
selective Despeckler and Pen Duster tools, a 3D Chisel
tool, a Metal Leafer tool, and Bit Blaster to brush
on textures with freehand control and penpoint accuracy.
Photoshop
Elements is a new product designed specifically for
amateur photographers, hobbyists, and business users
who want access to many of the same advanced tools used
by graphics professionals to enhance images for both
print and the Web.
