FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
DOLPHIN-ASSISTED THERAPY
- WHAT TYPES OF CHILDREN BENEFIT THE MOST FROM DAT?
The children that experience the most success come from loving,
supportive, involved families who arrive with realistic goals
and expectations. Families that continue to work, play and use
the techniques learned with their children once they return home
realize the greatest overall benefits.
- WHAT TYPES OF CHILDREN DO NOT BENEFIT FROM DAT?
The children who do not benefit from DAT or show little improvement
are those whose families do not participate, or who do not give
their children unconditional acceptance and encouraging support.
Families should come with realistic expectations and goals. They
should not expect that their child would be healed or cured.
Children with behavioral problems, extreme fears or who are
moderately/severely autistic or disabled may show little or no
improvement.
- WILL MY NON-VERBAL CHILD LEARN TO TALK?
If your child has the capacity to learn to talk, it may be possible
that he/she will be motivated by their experience to speak a few sounds
and/or words. Children that are non-verbal do not miraculously begin
speaking because of DAT. Some children and families learn new techniques,
such as the use of signs and pictures, to enhance or maximize their
communication abilities.
- WILL DOLPHIN ASSISTED THERAPY HEAL MY CHILD?
You may see changes in your child, but we attribute these to an
increase in their self-esteem, motivation and confidence. We
have not witnessed any "miracle healing". Dolphins are not
able to perform miracle cures or change medical diagnosis.
- DO DOLPHINS HAVE THE ABILITY TO HEAL?
This is a controversial question. Although there are those who
believe that dolphins have the ability to heal, there is very
little scientific evidence to support this belief.
