Why should designers and/or non-designers participate in the competition?

It’s a good opportunity to think about what human rights means to you, what it means to others, and to contribute your ideas to this meaningful issue.

Why do human rights need a logo?

A symbol is a simple and powerful way to spread a message that defies language barriers and reflects what is important to us. A logo for human rights can reinforce the solidarity that people around the world share in supporting our fundamental rights as human beings.

Do you have an example for a good (or even perfect) logo design and why do you think it is perfect?

I think different kinds of logos work for different kinds of contexts. In this case, the logo will be used in many countries and people will hopefully use it everywhere from the office to the streets. The symbol should be strong and memorable enough to stand on its own without words, and it should be simple enough to hand-scribble on a picket sign.

What is your opinion on crowdsourcing in general?

I think it better reflects the community, hot mess and all. Many of my projects are analogue crowdsourcing experiments in public space, like I Wish This Was (iwishthiswas.com), Before I Die (beforeidie.cc), and Looking for Love Again (lookingforloveagain.org). It can be a powerful tool to share our hopes and dreams, bring like-minded people together, and make changes that better reflect what people want. My colleagues and I also just launched an online crowdsourcing tool called Neighborland (neighborland.org) that’s a fun and easy way for people to shape future businesses and services in their neighborhoods. We are currently launching it in New Orleans and will be expanding to other cities in the coming months.

What does a good logo need?

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said it best: »Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.« I think he was originally referring to writing, but that’s a good thing to keep in mind when creating a logo too!
