Behind the Caleb saga…

This is the final post on my special coverage of Sonata Arctica’s Caleb saga, which is divided into four songs, next I’m going to present what I think they mean, in chronological order:

Caleb: The song describes how Caleb, as a little boy grew torn apart between two different attitudes of the same person: his mother, she hated him, and his father, she was probably raped or just hurted repeatedly by Caleb’s father, psychologically, physically or both, she saw the reflection of the man she hated on Caleb, so she hated him too (“I hate it and fear can’t face it the child is not right, he’s my greatest shame”), but, at the same time, she loved the boy, hoping everything would get right someday, (hence the “…, taught her son At the end of every tunnels a little light…” line), Caleb grew to be just like his father, thanks to his mother, besides he was just like him, he hated him anyways (“Smiled at his funeral “Happy you’re dead””) which left him with some kind of mental disease and maybe some sort of obsession with death (“… and dried up flowers are so beautiful. And it applies to all things living, and dead.”).

The End of This Chapter: This happens when Caleb is already grown up, he had a relationship with some girl, being mentally unstable, he grew obsessed with her(“I gave you my time I gave you my whole life I gave you my love, every dime”) maybe because of this, she left him. He, as obsessed with her as he was, tracked her down for a long time, until finally finding her, knowing she moved on with her life and now has another boyfriend (“You have new love and It looks good on you”), phoning her, he waited out of her house, waiting to take revenge, she finally enters and sits next to her, as to create breed fear on her, which arouses him (“Kills me, it thrills me…”), he finally waits on her bedside waiting to finally take his revenge.

Don’t Say a Word: An immediate follow-up to TEOTC, happening on the same night, he moves on to torture her psychologically (“Once again my shadow will enter your life Time to walk with me the last mile…”) and blame her for his disgrace (“It wasn’t me who ran away, you made me stray…”), he’s somewhat of toying around with the idea of killing her, he tries to make her confess that she loves him (“Open your blue eyes, tell me that you love me, whore Make me believe it, oh I know you lie”), I believe he strapped and gagged her maybe on a chair, or on her bed and starts recalling his mother’s words (“Mother always said my son…”), and tries to convince her that what she had with him was the best thing that happened to her (“We had it all so sweet Made for me, you, indeed…”), it concludes with him finally deciding to kill her (“Closing your eyes, don’t ever say you love me, whore…”)

Juliet: This song finally reveals the girl’s name, It’s not very clear how, but Caleb is dying, he may have killed himself, or she freed and stabbed (or used any other form that would give him some time to speak) him (“These are my final lines, I’ve lived all my nine lives, My nights are over, cannot feel your heart anymore”), but it’s more likely that she did it (“I’m paralyzed and you are still alive.”), he then recalls his life (“Life is but a long, sad game Lifeless souls, avoiding shame”), says he has nothing to regret (“It is too late to regret anything tonight After what has come to light”), he again tells her to recall their relationship (“You know what you meant to me,” and “I lived only by you, My scar, my heart, my truth, My sole reason to die… for There’s no life without you”), he also tell her that she will remember him (“…Your reality… Mirrors my hopes, Where you will need me…”), it ends with Caleb finally dying and realizing he was played with all the time (“…You have played me for a fool, for all this time?”, “These are my final lines, I’ve used all my nine lives,
My life is over, cannot feel your heart anymore”) and Juliette closing his eyes (“This is… the end… Why…? You’re closing my eyes…”)

The whole saga is amazing, with some of the darkest lyrics I’ve ever seen, yet with a melodic background, great atmosphere and the creepy deep vocals really add something to it. Tony Kakko is, without a doubt, one of the best songwriters on the world, I don’t know where this whole idea of a saga about a stalker came from, but I just hope it wasn’t someone he knew. Does anyone else think that someone should make a movie about this?

I think that the movie would not be as amazing as these songs. Sonata did a great job, I have loved “Juliet” since I heard it for the first time and “Don’t say a word” may be the best song played by SA – in my opinion. I wish nobody ever touches these great masterpieces, just leave them and do not ruin them, they are perfect… I hope you know what I mean…

I wonder if Sonata will somehow return to this saga in the following album, although Caleb is dead so probably not

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this, the songs are just astonishing, and everyone has different meaning about what they mean (and which one is first etc.)! You explained this deep masterpiece so that I understood it; THANK YOU!! 😀

In my interpretation, as Caleb said in DSaW:
“I read a book about a man, a love, a woman and how they died”

I think that it’s a reference to Romeo and Juliet.
That said, Caleb tried to reproduce what happened in the book with the girl, where both would drink the poison and die together. Then, the girl fooled him, and didn’t actually drank the poison, letting him die alone.

Maybe Juliette isn’t even her real name, as Caleb is insane, maybe he linked the girl with Juliet from the book.

Also, sorry for my grammatical errors. d:

    • I actually like your idea about the whole “reproducing Romeo and Juliet thing” it’s pretty good, but well, as I said, it was my opinion and I’m really glad to see that people really have different meanings for this awesome songs, it really shows how much SA can achieve.
PS: Your english is pretty good!

i think theres is a missing link like when did he meet juliet?? is there another song that covesr this? like broken or shy??

    Actually, Broken might make sense. Shy seems to link better with Letter to Dana and fits a different personality from Caleb. Broken, however, has the references to the bad childhood and screwed up romance. Perhaps this Juliette was the one to originally plant Caleb’s obsession of her in him. “Fell in love with the weakness within me;
Tried to force me the Ring and own me.” This line shows the manipulative nature of the woman he’s with and could arguably be what led to Caleb’s obsession. Just a theory.

I always wondered what the line “There’s a man in this world who has never smiled. You may know his tragedy, the later years, by heart” in “Caleb” meant.
Why would you say that the listener knows it “by heart”?
Haha, because it is an alusion to some other, earlier songs by SA 🙂

Thanks for the good ideas, actually, these songs fit together quite well! I think I should listen more often to the old songs to find links between them 🙂
