We have several way to translate “swear”(or curse) : “turpiloquio” (noun, formal) and “parolaccia” (noun, informal) or bestemmia (noun,less informal ) . Swearing means also “giurare”, but it is very different, it is not a so bad behaviour like a curse.
Obviously all those words you can define by the terms above, are informal 😀
Which are the differences?
Well, the difference is that bestemmia is a speech, usually more than a word, that involves religious names. Not simple the vocative “Christ”, but adding some adjective that is not “saint” or “good”, as you can imagine.
Others swearing words are informal or vulgar words for genitals or for actions that involve sex.
I don’t like swearing, but… I also swearing when I ‘m really angry
I say mainly
vaffanculo = I dare that it can be translate “fuck you “, this is used in very different situations
stronzo, pezzo di merda = litteraly turd , especially driving through italian roads
merda= shit , for example when you broke something ( or someone 
) without purpose ( I mean you didn’t want broke it, but you did)
testa di cazzo= head of penis , same us eof stronzo, often used together “sei uno stronzo testa di cazzo ” , someone very very stupid.
cazzo = penis , same use that “merda”
others: mi stai sul cazzo , mi sta sul cazzo = illocically this means “I don’t like you /it /someone/something” ( litteraly : “you stand on my penis”)
I ‘m sorry , I can’t swearing longer … so I stop here, but just me, the list itself could be very long.
Perhaps I’m too much “respectable” , it’s not so easy publishing swear , I can’t imagine it could be so hard ! 😦 incredible… I’m too conditioned by politeness!!!

He’s right. In effect, English cusses but doesn’t curse. We have a few cuss words and they pretty much fit in any context you want. If you watch “sopranoes”, almost every fifth word is “fucking”. This does not have the same character as in Italian; if I may, it just shows someone is rude, or has a low level of education.
I don’t know if hellboy agrees, but the Irish seem to be clever “cursers”. THeir Catholic religion gives them a lot of Saints and Mary expressions that Protestant do not have We only have God and Christ, but cursing them not only is in bad taste, but risky 🙂

I can’t find a difference definition of curse and cuss on my vocabulary , it tell the same “maledire” or similar, but it doesn’t point out any difference… I guess that you are using cuss for “dire parolacce” and curse for “bestemmiare”, am I right?
