Summary of Past Data

Note: We have some work to do on data for (1998-2000) from another server. We are hopeful that we can soon provide some of that to you.

1993 Data - March 15 through April 30,1993

Total animals killed involving 25 schools throughout New England.

Week #1 - 196
Week #2 - 279
Week #3 - 504
Week #4 - 336
Week #5 - 449
Week #6 - 159

Total of 1923 animals killed for the period.

The roadkill data for 1993 reported 82% mammals, 15% birds, and 3% reptiles and amphibians.

Merritt Clifton, Editor Animal People Newspaper, used the 1993 roadkill statistics and estimated that the following animals are being killed by motor vehicles:

41 million squirrels
26 million cats
22 million rats
19 million opossums
15 million raccoons
6 million dogs
350,000 deer

He also believes that the moon phases have an effect on the amount of roadkills. Further study is needed to support this theory.

1994 Data - March 14 through May 15,1994

Total animals killed involving 45 schools throughout New England.

Week #1 - 698
Week #2 - 801
Week #3 - 857

Week #6 - 159
Week #7 - 292
Week #8 - 308

Total of 2881 animals killed for the period.

* Note: The decrease in many animals may be attributed to the rabies outbreak throughout the New England area. Many of the animals such as raccoons, skunks, and opossums decreased in roadkill reports by as much as 50%!

1996 Roadkill Data - March 11 through May 5, 1996

Total animals killed involving 39 schools througout new England and other regions.

Week #1 - 309

* Note:Unusally cold weather and snow coverage during the spring months and the spread of the rabies virus throughout New England may account for the low numbers of animals killed by motor vehicles.
