YACHT - Dystopia

Bloodhound Gang’s Fire Water Burn is probably not the most favorable reference point you could assign to a song. But the hulking shadow of the American combatant's favorite musical motivator looms large over the latest single from Yacht, thanks to its “the earth is on fire…let the motherfucker burn” hook.

Yet Dystopia is far from moronic rap metal as a slow stomping beat and buzzing synths form an apop-alyptic backdrop to a resigned tale of a dying world where “every day the flames get higher”.

Originally formed by lone Oregon music maker Jona Bechtolt, Yacht has become a twosome in recent years and it is singer Claire L. Evans’ strident vocals that give Dystopia its end-of-the-world edge.

The single is the first taken from the group’s fifth album Shangri-La due later this month and the record is an exploration of utopian visions. We can only assume that Dystopia is an earth-shattering precursor to better places, but the creation of paradise has a lot to live up when Earth’s destruction sounds this good.
