Thursday 31st May

River Llynfi Dulas, Middle Beat.

May 31st

A delightful evening, bathed in lovely light after the air had been washed clean by showers. The Llynfi Dulas is a stream apart. Unlike most of the other tributaries, this brook flows through more lush meadows. It’s composed of many deep pools, in whose mysterious depths lie trout; lots of trout.

In mayfly season these fish can be seen from a great distance as ring after ring of rises wrinkle the smooth surface of the pools. There is a good hatch of mayfly on these pools, as the slower nature of the stream and its more silty bottom are ideal for the nymphs. The trout relish the nymphs, duns and spinners and the sport is great fun. Some of the trout have to knock the big flies out with a splashy rise and a flip of their tails before they can swallow the meaty mouthful.

The evening brought a wealth of flies, spinners of at least 4 species of mayfly and a few sedges as well. And the trout rose with gusto.

The Middle beat of the Llynfi Dulas is the process of being restored; fenced off to protect the banks, and coppiced to let in light. It is an education to look at the sections that have been restored and those awaiting their turn. A lovely river that will only grow lovelier and more productive.
