I have a startling hangover today, most of which I’m blaming on a concoction of my own creation. When we were in Meribel earlier in the year, our chalet rep said that you could make toffee vodka using a bottle of cheap vodka and six bags of Werther’s Originals. (If you’re not familiar with these sweets, they’re just a hard toffee with an annoying advertisment involving a kid who replies “a!” in response to being offered one by $elderrelative.) We had a few half bottles of cheap vodka knocking around the house, so I thought I’d give it a go. I couldn’t find the hard Werther’s at our local shop, only the new chewy variety, but thought this shouldn’t alter the flavour too much so bought four packs anyway. I combined all the vodka into one bottle, then passed it through one of those jug water filters to try and take the edge off it. No idea if it helped, but hey, why not. While the voddy was filtering, I started popping the toffees directly into one of the empty bottles. I’d considered chopping them up to increase their surface area and hence speed the toffee flavour’s progress into the vodka, but in the end I couldn’t be bothered to stand there trying to chop the little brown suckers in half. After putting in two and a half packs the bottle looked around half full of toffees. As I didn’t want to reduce the percentage of alcohol too significantly, I decided to stop there and pour the vodka back into the bottle. The sweets started to dissolve pretty much instantaneously, as can be seen in the following photo.
I’d guess this is because I used the chewy toffees rather than the hard ones. I kept inverting it once a day for the next few days, as the mixture would seperate slightly then semi-solidify. We left it for a couple of weeks, then a few friends dropped by last night and we gave it a go; here’s what it ended up looking like.
Verdict? Not bad, it’s still got a couple of lumps in, but the flavour of the toffee definitely over-rides that of the vodka, which was the main aim really.
And now, I think I might go back to bed…

I’LL GIVE IT A GO, AN OLD SEASONAIR OR MERIBEL / SURRETTER LES A LO
Apparently you’re meant to stick it in a dish washer to help dissolve the toffees, then leave it to chill before tasting …
Forget making your own its too much hassle,I have been in Val d isere this summer and came across a make called Thunder Toffee Vodka,I have made loads of bottles of toffee vodka from all sorts of differnt toffee flavoured things, nothing tops this,it is very toffee but not too sweet, and it blows your socks off.Sell this to your punters you cant go wrong.
You dont have to put up with all that hassle now of making your own.Thunder Toffee Vodka from the start of this ski season will be selling Thunder all over The French alps 06,go to thundervodka.com to get yours.
Thanks for that tip, bought a bottle of thunder toffee vodka, you are right it is fantastic, much better than the stuff bars make them selves.good on you thunder we will enjoy more.
Yo, chundervodka boys! Give up adding comments promoting your product to this post, I know the two above this one are from the same person. I should start charging for advertising space, honestly. Alternatively, send me free samples, bitches! 😈
Hi Si,You cant blame a bloke for trying, mail me direct and we will send you a sample.
cheers jon
Filtered vodka sounds interesting
There is a company in wales that makes Vodka Toffee, its called Toffoc, Buy British 🙂
I honestly thought this was a wind-up until I googled for Toffoc and found out that it really exists. I mean, “Get Toffoc”? But it is made on Anglesey, less than 20 miles from where my Gran used to live, so I guess I should definitely support it!
Nothing better than a few toffee vodka’s after a great day of skiing, I have been drinking the stuff in Val d’isere for years. I have never made my own but i did buy a bottle of Thunder vodka this Christmas and it was lovely, certainly brought back some great memories.
The best toffee vodka I’ve ever tasted was made in a guest house in Newquay. They’ve now gone onto bigger and better things (distilling wise) and it is available on line and in quite a few shops in cornwall. Thank the Lord
You should check out Thunder Vodka, they make proper toffee vodka and it’s really ratherr good! We’re hoping to get them along to this festival with a stand: http://www.gocstock.com
First time I ever had this terrific tipple was in Le Jump Bar in 2003 in Courcheval 1850. Seems most bars in French resorts have it now. Great chaser for a grande pression.
Whilst in Tignes in Jan this year, we got free shots of the stuff from the owner of a new bar / restaurant because we had such a wait to get served….He overheard us moaning 🙂 Anyway he also gave us the Wherthers recipe (including the put it in the dishwasher tip….but make sure you leave a gap for expansion when the liquid gets hot otherwise you will end up with sticky dishes.
My attempt, started a week ago and is currently looking like your second photo above…I am hoping it will clear completely, but I am not confident it will
So as I am impatient to try some again, I looked at, and have ordered some Thunder Vodka. I was going to go for the slightly cheaper Welsh version, but the website said I could only buy a case of twelve.
So Si, based on that you might want to try and get another free sample from the guys at Thunder !
The Thunder arrived earlier in the week and I took a bottle along to our Thursday night poker session with some friends.
Here’s how one of my mates described his evening…
OMG – I haven’t been that drunk for a long long time. Someone had bent all the pavements last night so it was extremelly difficult to walk home – Leffe, red wine, toffee vodka is not a combo I would recommend and neither is it one that I will be trying again! Woke up at about two o’clock on the floor of the spare room having fallen asleep while getting undressed. My eyes look like someone attacked me during the night with red marker pen and I have that red wine smile thing which makes me look like the joker from batman! I am ashamed – . ps did we play cards?
Ive brought single bottles from the Toffoc website. Its lovely, really smooth. Buy British!
I dont think i could be bothered with all this hasstle for a drink. The best toffee vodka ive ever tasted is toffoc o think its a company in wales.
I went to the channel 4 “TASTE” show in Regents Park on Saturday and found the Thunder toffee vodka stand, WOW that stuffs good ! They couldn’t sell bottles there, something about glass bottles in a Royal park apparently, so ive ordered mine off their website. In ebay jargon “HIGHLY RECOMENDED”
OK! Much as I love people visiting my blog, I’m going to close comments on this post. Thanks for all the interest!
