Vintage Blue Note Jazz Records
There’s been lots of attention (and several great books) over the years celebrating the amazing design legacy of vintage Blue Note jazz record sleeves, many of which were designed by the great Reid Miles, with those beautiful/famous b/w photos by Francis Wolff, but I recently stumbled across an amazingly comprehensive Japanese website called Vintage Vanguard, that has catalogued most (possibly each and every one) of them, and posted them (fronts and backs) in one place. Impressive, and just great to be able to admire all that incredible typographic playfulness again, which has been so influential on contemporary graphic design (and certainly on my own work).
these are, as always, FANTIASTIC! i just love the before computers feel.
Great covers – my favourites are Soul Station by Hank Mobley, Out to Lunch by Eric Dolphy and Somethin’ Else by Cannonball Adderley.
This tradition of great music packaged in beautiful graphic design is now carried on in the present day by ECM records. Inspirational.
Does anyone have an idea for the value of UNPLAYED Blue Noe records of 1940s ?

Don’t know, but I’d expect they’d get up there, particularly for “star” musicians like Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock. Do a scan on ebay, to see what’s there, and what’s been sold, and for how much.
Oh, 1940’s Blue Notes – much more value I would expect, since the label was really new, but had stars like Sidney Bechet. Again, check ebay.
marvellous.
