Bernard was also a substantive Colonel, promoted to Temp Brig.Gen., but granted the honorary rank of Brig. Gen. on retirement in 1920. Anne G-P remembered seeing him in full red tabs and brass hat kit at a funeral.

From 'Philip Bateman (1896 - 1965), his families and circle'
"At one stage he found himself encamped with his kite balloon and crew in a wood close to his uncle's headquarters in Vlamertinghe Chateau near Ypres. Brigadier General Bateman CMG, Officier de le Legion d'Honneur, commanded the heavy artillery of VIII Corps, covering the Ypres Salient and Philip was pleased to be spotting for his Uncle Bernard. Philip's cousin Bernard, a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and the General's only child, died of wounds after winning the Military Cross at Sanctuary Wood, near Ypres. "

His (modest) estate passed to Philip Bateman, inc his medals, and those of his son.

From Anthony; copy of a biog given out at his funeral; Brig.-General Bernard Montague Bateman C.M.G., Born 3rd July 1865, Died 15th March 1937. Brigadier-General Bernard Montague Bateman, C.M.G., who died at a London Nursing Home on the 15th March last at the age of 71 was educated at Wimbledon School, passed thence into the Royal Military Academy and was gazetted into the Royal Artillery on the 5th July 1884.
In 1888 he passed the Interpreter's examination in French and without any assistance from crammers "qualified" for the Staff College in 1890. He served three times as Adjutant, covering nearly 8 and a 1/2 years and only broken by illness, promotion and the South African War. As a Garrison Gunner he was considered lucky in getting to South Africa in January 1900 and served all the time in Remounts finishing as D.A.A.G. in September 1902 and being mentioned in despatches.
He served in the Great War with the Heavy Artillery from March 1915 to February 1918 - all the time in defence of the Ypres Salient. In 1916 he was created C.M.G., appointed Brigadier-General and promoted to Substantive Colonel. In 1917 he was created an officer of the Legion d'Honneur and received it from General Nivelle. He was three times mentioned in despatches. In December 1919 he retired from the army after serving as C.I.G., Scottish Command and C.R.A., Forth Garrison.
He made no pretension to being a scientific gunner, as he was always told - when Adjutant - he could not be spared to do the Long Course. As a man he was much loved by those under him for his justice, wonderful courage and the charm of his refreshing sense of humour which could always enliven any subject with a humurous common sense. Any order which was contrary to the interests of the service or the welfare of the officers and men under his command he would fight to the verge of losing his commission or appointment. These characteristics will remain an inspiration to many of his friends as long as they live.
In 1890 he married Alice Maude, daughter of Mr.A.B.Hinkson of Barbados and had one son, Lt. B.M.B. Bateman, M.C., R.F.A., who was mortally wounded in 1915 near Ypres.

Bernard married Alice Maude Hinkson, daughter of Augustus Briggs Hinkson and Unknown, on 18 Jun 1890 in St.Stephen's, Kensington, London. (Alice Maude Hinkson died on 12 Oct 1939 in Budleigh Salterton, Devon.)
