Colsaerts Leads Walton Heath Qualifiers For U.S. Open With A Sizzling 64.

In-form Belgium Nicolas Colsaerts set up a maiden U.S. Open appearance with a sizzling eight-under par 64 in his opening score at a 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath.

Colsaerts, who captured the recent Volvo China and also greatly impressed at the Volvo World Match-Play, led the field by two strokes after his effort over Walton Heath’s Old Course.

The big-hitting Belgiuim grabbed an eagle and 10 birdies to lead by two from France’s Thomas Levet.

“I had no idea of my score until I signed my card – I was just in the zone,” said Colsaerts.

Levet has played in five prior U.S. Open’s and no doubt buoyed by France winning the right to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Levet posted a six under par 66 on the New Course at Walton Heath in Surrey.

Just 84 players teed-up in the 36-hole qualifier delayed by three-and-a-half hours due to mist and fog.

It meant the opening round tee time pushed back to 10.10am.

Germany’s Marcel Siem and Sweden’s Alex Noren were next best with 67s.

French players Raphael Jacquelin and Gregory Bourdy also impressed in front of a big gathering of supporters on a Bank Holiday Monday to be among a group with scores of 68.

However no sooner had the players took to the course and rain began falling on the course.

Organisers are hoping to get play completed today but if not, the qualifier will continue through to tommorrow.

The leading 11 players will qualify to tee-up on June 16th at Congressional.
