Where is the Island of North Caicos?

The Turks & Caicos Islands are two groups of islands in a archipelago of eight islands located 575 miles southeast of Miami or 39 miles southeast of the Bahamas chain. The Island of North Caicos is one of the larger islands and is about 12 miles long and 5 miles at its widest point (41 square miles). The Island of North Caicos is a less populated island and is home to only about 1,500 people. It is clean, quiet, more secluded and utterly peaceful.

 

What is the official language on Island of North Caicos?

English.

 

What time zone is it in?

Atlantic StandardTime (ADT).

 

What is the currency?

The main currency is the U.S. dollar. The Treasury also issues a Turks & Caicos crown and quarter.

 

Should I bring cash, a credit or ATM card or Travelers checks?

You should bring cash and travelers checks, though credit cards are welcomed in some places. There are no banks or ATMs on the Island of North Caicos.

 

What is the climate?

The average year-round temperature is 830 F (280 C). The hottest months are September and October, when the temperature can reach 900 to 950 F (330 to 350 C). Humidity is very low and prolonged rain rare – though you may get a brief tropical rain shower during the day to break up the sunshine.

 

What should I bring to wear?

Dress is casual and comfortable. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and bathing suits are a must. Shorts and t-shirts will be perfect in most situations: you may want to pack a set of semi-casual attire just in case. You may also want to pack a sweater and a pair of slacks. Also, if you plan to play golf, a collared shirt is required.

 

Electric current?

120/240V, 60 Hz. Because electricity costs three times as much as it does in North America, we ask that you turn off the lights and AC when you go outside.

 

DVD/Video Cassette/TV?

Each suite has a DVD/Video Cassette (VHS) Recorder connected to a TV screen. There is no local TV, so bring your favorite DVD movies and DVD music discs and/or VHS cassettes. We do have a nice growing DVD movie collection.


WiFi High- Speed Internet access?

Yes, just bring your computer, we provide complementary WiFi Internet access in each Suite. We have WiFi wireless ADSL or  you can plug your network cable into the Internet wall jack. Turn your computer on, click on your browser and you're connected to the Internet.

 

Drinking water?

Water is collected primarily from rainwater in cisterns. This water is good for bathing and cooking. For dining, you want to use bottled water - we start you off with a one gallon bottled water jug. Water is a precious commodity on this beautiful island and we ask that you help conserve it.

 

Customs and immigration for Turks and Caicos?

It is best to enter with a passport. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda must present a passport to enter (or re-enter) the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere. Children also need a passport. You must also be able to show a valid return or continuation ticket.


What kind of equipment, gear and entertainment come with the suite?

For guest use, there are quality bicycles, snorkeling and kayaking equipment  is provided. Also, enjoy a variety of board games, located in your suite (checkers, chess, backgammon, including dominos, cribbage, dice and a deck of playing cards).  


How do I arrange scuba diving trips?

There are options for either diving on North Caicos or on Provo. On Provo, the operator will pick you up and drop you back off at the water ferry terminal. We would be happy to make whatever arrangements you would like before your arrival or you can make arrangements directly while you are there. Remember to bring your dive certification card.

 

Where will I see the Corral Reefs?

You can see the coral reefs snorkeling off shore or on a scuba dive. The Turks & Caicos Islands are world famous for the 1,000 square miles of reef that surrounds us. You will find this magnificent barrier reef less than 500 yards off the beach at Hollywood Beach Suites, including coral formations before the main reef. The coral reef is a natural treasure that we are all responsible to preserve and help flourish. This reef also contributes to the calm, clear water close to shore.


How extensive are the nature reserves and sanctuaries?

There are extensive inviting nature reserves and sanctuaries to insure that the Island of North Caicos retains its delicate eco system. For example, Ramsar Site Sanctuary covers the south of the island, with marsh and wetlands and breeding sites for lobster, conch and fish. To the North East of the island, East Bay Islands National Park protects thee uninhabited cays with unspoiled beaches and iguanas. Flamingo Pond in Whitby near the North shore protects large flocks of flamingos. While, to the North West Three Mary Cays National Park protects cays with osprey populations.

 

What other kinds of excursions are available?

We can help to arrange guided sightseeing tours to take in the historical and natural wonders of the island or rent a jeep and motor around the island at your own pace. We would also be happy to set you up on a cave safari to pre-Colombian caves on Middle Caicos, or arrange for the boat ride or fishing trip of your dreams. Guided kayak eco-adventures to nearby uninhabited cays can also be arranged.

 

What about meals?

Each Hollywood Beach Suite has a fully equipped kitchen with all the cookware you could possibly need, from a blender to a microwave and toaster, all sorts of pots, pans and cookware, a coffee maker, wine glasses, china, you name it. There is an island grocery store, KJ’s Grocery, about half a mile from your suite. At KJ’s you’ll find milk, bread, eggs, butter, frozen meats (e.g., ribs, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, bacon, etc.), some fresh fruits and vegetables, canned food and bottled water. There are also several other convenience and modest grocery stores throughout the Island of North Caicos. Brand names tend to be limited.

The island fisherman can supply you with the “catch of the day” such as the freshest snapper, grouper, lobsters in season (Normally August 1st to March 31st) and of course conch. Then you can just fire-up the gas BBQ by the beach for that memorable fresh cooked fish dinner. 


What about organic food options?

There is a government organic farm in Kew, 8 miles or 11 minutes by car. You will find, with some seasonal items: tomatoes, green peppers, hot peppers, scallions, cucumbers, eggplant, bok choy, callaloo, sweet potatoes, and squash. Herbs: thyme, parsley, and basil.


Wine and spirits?

There is a very small liquor store 1/2 miles from Hollywood Beach Suites, there is also a larger store near the North Caicos airport called My Dees Liquor.

 

Is cooking help available?

Yes, cooking help is available. Better yet, a delicious native cooked meal can be brought directly to your Suite - such as conch, snapper, and spinney lobsters in season!

 

Is there a barbecue facility?

Absolutely – a large barbeque gas grill next to the beach, just where it should be. Equipment for making the perfect barbecue can be found in your suite kitchen. 

 

Are there any restaurants?

There are several casual local dining options. There are a couple of restaurants within about a 5 to 25 minute walk on the beach (one is seasonal, the further one) and a some more local fare a short ride away.

 

Are there telephones available?

There are no land line phones in the suites, but we provide you with a cell phone during your stay. The phones are prepaid with at least an initial pre-load of $10 - incoming calls are free, you only pay for the outgoing calls you make. You can buy additional time at KJ’s Grocery. You may also choose to bring your own cell phone. Most phone providers now use GSM on the island. CDMA System cell phones will not work on the islands. To initialize your own cell phone on island, simply start any call and normally one of the local telephone providers will come on. The international telephone code for the island of North Caicos is 649, for international calls dial 01, plus the country code and number. For local and international directory assistance, dial 118. Dial 911 for emergencies.

 

How will I get around the island?

Many places are within walking distance. KJ’s Grocery store and Flamingo Pond is a short walk (less then half of a mile from the Suites). For a Taxi, you can reach Charlie’s Taxi at 946-7167 (or 241-7575). There are also a number of other local on island taxi providers whom will be happy to assist you. Rental cars are available on the island for approximately $75 a day or $400 per week. We would be happy to make any rental arrangements you desire before your arrival in paradise.


How do I travel between Provo and North Caicos?
The best way is by interisland water ferry service with Caribbean Cruisn'. The water ferry has multiple daily regularly scheduled departures. The water ferry service one way trip is $25 dollars per person or $50 dollars per person round trip. Once we have your arrival and departure info we are happy to make the water ferry reservations on your behalf.

Are there medical facilities available?

You will want to bring whatever prescription medicine you require. There are two small medical clinics on the Island of North Caicos, and a resident nurse and doctor. Additionally, the nearby island of Providenciales has a full pharmacy and a more extensive medical facility. In case of emergency, there is helicopter for hire available for the short flight to the hospital in Grand Turk or to Miami.
