Whether the business is large or small, many of the organizations are using servers. All the companies depend on the servers everyday. So, regardless of the profile, many organizations are using this servers.

Computer server is defined as the computer, which is used for offering services to all the computers or the terminals that are connected to the server. The tasks of the computer server will depend on the type of the server.


The general tasks which a server performs are as follows:

• The server will provide security features and in turn protects all the computers which are connected to it.
• All the information which is required by the other terminals connected to it will provided by the servers as they store the applications and the databases.
• Each computer attached to the computer server can be operated using the IP address.

Based on the performance, servers are classified into two types - shared and the dedicated servers. A shared server is used for multiple purposes. Where as dedicated servers are used for the specific purposes only.

Most of the large businesses show interest in purchasing the dedicated servers only because they are used for their company's specific needs. Because of the factors like more security, higher traffic rates, faster data access, this dedicated severs are used.

While coming to the shared servers, these servers are used by the multiple users. Here neither the customization is needed nor individual hard disks are needed for the computers.

While purchasing a server, one should keep in mind the following features like memory size, processor speed, hard drive capacity, security features etc.
