Fabric stores galore!

Mary Sloan of the Irish Patchwork Society was kind enough to email this list of fabric stores to me. I know it doesn’t make sense to go to every single one… but that’s what I want to do!!

Dublin:
The Woollen Mills, 41/42 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1, phone: +353 (0)1 8280301 email: info@woollenmills.ie
They sell some cottons upstairs (not much), but do have quilters’ tools and threads. It’s right in the city centre on the north side of Halfpenny Bridge.

Murphy Sheehy, 14 Castle Market, Dublin 2 (a complete Alladin’s cave of fabric everywhere!) You never know what you’ll find here. They often have nice linens and
we buy a lot of their white sheeting and dye it. They do muslin, but no quilting tools at all.

Hickey’s on Henry Street – off O’Connell Street on the north side of the river. It’s mostly curtain fabrics, dress fabrics, but they do have a few craft fabrics downstairs.

In the suburbs is a really good selection in Wendy Huggins’house-
Fabric Matters – www.fabricmatters.ie
She lives near Rathfarnham on the south side of the city. Phone number: +353 (0)1 4946320 by arrangement. She has a great selection of lovely fabrics and this is well worth a visit. It’s very easy to find her house by car or taxi – although she is in the suburbs.

Outside Dublin:

Fabric Gallery at 4 Village Gate, Bray, County Wicklow, – www.fabric-gallery.com
Anne Jeffares Phone: +353(0)1 2860979 This is certainly possible with public transport and is well worth a visit. It’s like an Alladin’s cave. Get the dart from the city centre (Connolly Station, Tara Street Station or Pearse Street station going south to Bray. It’s almost the last stop and is at least half an hour/three quarters of an hour by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport)). Anne’s shop is on the main street, near the church. Ask for Village Gate.

Just Cotton with Penny Toolin; web site: www.justcotton.ie and you can arrange to visit her showroom. Just Cotton studio shop is open Mon & Tues, 10am -5pm , other days and weekends/bank holidays by arrangement – ring first on +353 (0)46 94 30877

Quilt Art Workshops, 4 Mill Wood, Naas, County Kildare, Grania McElligott has very beautiful linens, silk, cottons and wools – hand dyed – and threads. Phone: +353 (0)45 876121, email: graniamcelligott@eircom.net. Grania’s work can be found in many books and she teaches abroad. You need to ring beforehand.

  5. Thank you! thank you! I had been searching the internet quite unsucessfully for fabric stores in Ireland prior to my trip there in June – until I found your site. Now I’ll be able to visit them and hopefully purchase fabric to make a souvenir quilt when I return home. Great information overall!

Great! glad someone is going to get some use out of my list! I have more to add, so I’ll try to do that soon. Just be warned: Most of the quilt fabrics are imported from the U.S. and they’re very expensive. There isn’t much in the way of Irish-themed fabric either. And fabric stores are way different than in the States-dressmaking fabrics and home decorating fabrics are sold at in different stores; Hickey’s being an exception (at least the one I visited in Limerick had both dressmaking and home dec fabrics). Almost all of the quilt shops are run out of someone’s home and they bring their store to meetings and events; my understanding is that Maeve Meany’s Limerick Quilt Centre in Limerick is the only quilt fabric store in Ireland. If you can make contact with the Irish Patchwork Society, and attend a meeting, that would be the best! I went to a quilt meeting in Limerick and had a wonderful time! I think I have a link somewhere… Anyway, have fun! Ireland is AWESOME!!

  12. I will be visiting Ireland in April. I am a traditional rug hooker and am interested in knowing if there are groups of rug hookers in Ireland and where to fiind wool yardage?
I have tried other sites but only see latch hook or wool yard sites. Could you help me?
    Thank you.
    E. Reid

    • sorry, no… I don’t know anything about rug hooking. try finding a national group; or try a craft organization. best of luck to you-

  13. Just saw this site – planning a trip to Ireland and am an avid quilter. Getting excited to checkout the country and the stores! Keep me posted. Thanks!

  14. Fabric Gallery in Bray has moved; it’s now on Church Terrace. Its a little hard to find, becausr Church Terrace is small and looks residental. The fabric store is behind a blind curve, past a furnitute repair. Ask a local

  15. Many Thanks for this site I recently moved here & have found it extremely useful

  16. I will be making my 6th trip to Ireland, Ballyclough specifically, and would order some fabric to be sent to my daughter there IF I could find a website of quilt goods that does mail order.

    Any suggestions?

    Bev – 1/2011

I’m afraid not; you might check the Woolly Way; it’s a blog that focuses on fiber in Ireland-sorry, I don’t have the URL, but you should be able to google it.
    Edie
