The Jaltarang, one of the most rarely heard instruments today, is among the oldest instruments in the world. It consists of china bowls filled with water and struck by two wooden sticks. Earlier, since china clay bowls were not available, artists used to play this instrument with metal bowls. Each bowl can be tuned to the desired frequency by varying the quantity of water in it. These bowls are placed in a semi-circle arrangement around the artist and played. The Jaltarang has a pleasant characteristic tone similar to the Feng Shui wind chimes. The player can produce on it, classical Indian Ragas and light melodies as well. Jaltarang is a unique instrument in the sense that it is both a percussion, as well as non-percussion instrument.
Jaltarang is a dying art. Inspired by Jaltarang, glass music became popular in sixteenth century Europe using glasses in place of cups. Another variation of the Jaltarang is found in Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan in India, where a single metal plate, called the thali, filled with water, is used as an accompaniment by applying strokes to produce different tones and rhythms. It is called Jaltaal. Although Jaltarang has been prevalent for over five hundred years, the instrument attracted attention in the first half of the 20th century.

Jaltarang was extensively used in film music and orchestral compositions until recently. The song posted above from the Hindi movie Kaamchor (1982) is a good example of how Jaltarang could be used with amazing effect. However, this instrument is losing its popularity because the lack of ease the artists feel while trying to play the more complex Ragas. Very few artists in recent times have been able to adopt it as their main instrument for classical performances. Among these few are Milind Tulankar, Ragini Trivedi, Ranjana Pradhan and Anayampatti S Ganesan.

Unfortunately despite of being one of the oldest form of music, this form of art is dying a slow and painful death due to the fact that not many people take it up as a form of music and due to lack of exposure. Not many people know about this. If we truly want to save this art form from dying we need to expose it more people so that we get a fan base established and hence people can start listening and learning this too. I don’t know if my suggestion will be taken into consideration or not. but here is a suggestion that I’d like to give. We could start by promoting it on websites which provide free music. and since now a days people prefer to download and listen to music before paying ( or not paying ) for it hence this attempt is worth a try. Eventually if by any chance professional artists in this field provide free albums (in high quality) to these sites , The chances of listening to these albums can increase (if they really want to save this form of art i am sure they’d love to do this). and Mr./Ms. mod I’d also request you that if you are a real music lover and are non biased then you could release the music on not only on your site but also on http://www.welove-music.net as this site has quite a popular user base and it specialises in promoting world music and that too for free. you could catch up with the mods out there and talk to them over this. I am sure the people out there would help as the best part about the content out there is that its not your regular-type-of-trash-music (which often does not have a great shelf life) but on the contrary this site features world music which is posted by people who are into good music and is visited by people from all over the world who are into world music

Playing jataranga in Swaramandal style is JALAMANDAL. It will have a very melodious sanntooric pleasent sound with gayaki style, continuity and staying on one swara and fast layakari guts.
