Why was this started?
One of Hindi grammar’s challenge is to figure out whether an inanimate noun is masculine or feminine. We all know the guidelines (words ending with “aa” are masculine, words ending with “ii” are feminine) We also know that this guidelines are not followed plenty of times to drive everyone nuts! It is imperative to learn the gender classification as the associated adjective or pronoun, follows the same classification.
This challenge gave birth to ‘Is it a HE or a SHE’. Hopefully, I will get a laugh while I try to paint a picture for you to easily remember the masculinity or feminity of these Hindi nouns. 7. Phool: flower (masculine)
Tip To Remember: One of the main offerings to God in a Hindu temple is flowers. And for reasons unknown to me; we all most often address God as ‘He’. He is loving and merciful. He is my shepherd and will take care of me.
That’s one way to remember that this offering to God is classified as masculine in Hindi. Thus, ‘phool’ flower is categorized as masculine. Phool is a ‘HE’
Sentence Formation:
(1) ye baRaa phool hai. This is a big flower.
(2) ye meraa manpasand phool hai. This is my favorite flower.
(3) kyaa aapne kaalaa phuul dekhaa hai? Have you seen a black flower?

6. Khushi: happiness (feminine)
Tip To Remember: As explained below , women tend to get less angry, therefore happiness forms a greater part of their life. So, ‘kushi’ is categorized as feminine. Kushi is a ‘SHE’
Sentence Formation:
(1) Sheela ko khushii huii (Happiness happened to Sheela which means Sheela got happy.)
(2) aapse milkar kushii hogii ( I will be pleased to meet you)
(3) phuulo^ ko dekhane se kushii milatii hai ( I feel happiness watching flowers)

5. Anger: gussaa: masculine
Tip To Remember: It is a well-known fact that women tend to be more patient than men, therefore their tendency to jump up and down in anger is less compared to that of men. So, ‘gussa’ is categorized as masculine. gussaa is a “HE”
Sentence Formation:
(1) Sheela ko gussaa aayaa. (Sheela got angry.)
(2) mujhe gussaa aa rahaa hai. ( I am getting angry.)
(3) Mary ko bahut gussaa aataa hai. (Mary gets angry a lot)

4. dukaan: Feminine, dukaan
Tip to remember: One of my student associates dukaan being feminine because he said “women like to shop so the word for shop has to be feminine.” I could not agree more. Thanks Santhosh.
Sentence formation:
(1) vah dukaan baRii hai. (That shop is big)
(2) vah harii dukaan achchhii hai. (That green shop is good.)
(3) yah Ramu kii dukaan hai. (This is Ramu’s shop)
(4) merii dukaan kal khulegii. (My shop will open tomorrow)
(5) aapkii dukaan yahaa^ se kitanii duur hai? (How far is your shop from here?)

3. Work: kaam: masculine. Work is classified with the masculine gender in Hindi. Work is a ‘HE’.
Tip to remember: if women like to shop, what do men like? work!! They don’t really have a choice. Someone has to work so that we, women, can shop in stores. Need I tell you why kaam is masculine now?
Sentence Formation:
(1) yah kaam achchhaa hai. (This work is good)
(2) Seema kaa kaam bahut mushkil hai. (Seema’s work is very difficult)
(3) thoRaa kaam hai. (Work is less)
(4) aapkaa kaam kyaa hai? (What is your work)
(5) kal kaam bahut zyaadaa thaa. (Yesterday, work was too much)

2. baat karanaa: feminine. To talk is classified with feminine gender in Hindi. To talk or To say is a ‘SHE’.
Tip to remember: I have to confess, I talk way more than my husband. I ask the same question, “so, how was school today?” to my kids after school. My 11 year old daughter is full of stories and takes most of the commute time telling her stories of the day whereas my 10 yr. old son gives me the same answer “it was good.” If I had not asked him to talk in full sentences, I know I will hear “good” “Ok” “same as yesterday” at the most. Therefore baat karanaa , to talk is not wrong in being classified as feminine.
Sentence Formation:
(1) vo achchhii baate^ karataa hai. (He says good things.)
(2) mujhe us se baat karanii hai. ( I have to talk to him/her)
(3) Ram se baat karanii hai. ( I have to talk to Ram)
(4) Sheela bahut der se baat kar rahii hai. ( Sheela is talking for a long time)
(5) Ram ne bahut kharaab baat kii (Ram said something really bad)

1. daftar (दफ्तर): Masuline: Office is classified with masculine gender in Hindi. Office is a ‘HE’.
Tip to remember: Historically, man was the hunter/gatherer and woman took care of the home. Therefore the daftar (modern replacement for hunters and gatherers) is of masculine gender. Also recollect that earlier tip to remember for the word ‘kaam’ (work). kaam is also of masculine gender. So, men do kaam at the daftar to give women then pleasure of shopping (khariid-daarii:Feminine)
Sentence formation:
(1) vah office baRaa hai. (That office is big.)
(2) vah bhuuraa daftar meraa hai. (That brown offfice is mine.)
(3) yah Ramu kaa daftar hai. (This is Ramu’s office.)
(4) meraa daftar kal khulegaa. (My office will open tomorrow.)
(5) aapkaa daftar yahaa^ se kitanaa duur hai? (How far is your office from here?)

Don’t muse too much over the sentence formations for now. Just remember the gender classification of these words. This will help at lengths when you dive into learning Hindi or if you are already there, you will swim or float rather than sink in your learning adventure. Do notice how the verb and adjective follows the same gender classification as our chosen word. (shown by bold letters aa or ii).
