Concept of designer market launched in Dubai

By Jamil Khan @ Gulf Today-Sharjah, Jan 07, 2010

During the last couple of years, the trend of flea markets has been increasing in Dubai and Sharjah as many people, who have purchased branded items for their houses, have not to throw the expensive items as garbage, and they sell them at suitable prices in flea markets.
Some people who plan to return to their countries prefer to send major household items through cargo but many who are unable to pay the exorbitant fee have a couple of options to do something about this.
Those who are unable to bear the exorbitant fee of cargo call the brokers from the second-hand markets. The brokers visit their houses to bid the prices and if the both parties agree the movers shift the household items to their shops. The second-hand markets in Sharjah are located on Immigration Road where dozens of shops deal in almost all type of household items.
Many shopkeepers purchase used items on cheap rates and sell them on affordable prices to those who need them.
Talking to The Gulf Today, Mushtaq a trader at the second-hand bazaar in Sharjah says that they are in the business for the last six years and the business is good as usual. “Many people want to sell their household goods as well as many visit market to purchase good quality goods on affordable prices which are available in this market with multiple choices,” he said.
However, in Dubai a number of organisers have been promoting the concept of “flea market” to provide a chance for people to sell their unwanted and used household items by themselves and enjoy the bargain with people.
The Green Spot Entertainment is one such organiser who has been in the business for the last over two years and has started Dubai Flea Market as well as other such projects in Dubai.
They have announced to launch a new market concept, “Dubai Designer Market” which will be a platform for young designers to showcase their latest designs along with the opportunity for the people to sell and buy branded items.
The organisers also hope that the great opportunity for residents is to witness the availability of used brands and vintage items such as Guggi bags, Prada shoes, Channel dresses, Bvlgari jewellery and many more.
The second-hand market professional Melanie Beese, founder of Dubai Flea Market, sees a great demand for this market concept due to the high-end consumer profile in Dubai.
Young fashion designers are wanted to showcase their designs on the catwalk.
The fashion show/catwalk setup will be held on Jan.16 at Beach park Plaza Centre, Jumeirah-2, opposite Jumeirah Beach Park from 1pm to 6pm.
