Hunter’s Star–outside

Well it rained on Sunday and Sunday night a little but by afternoon the deck was dry and out came the quilt to shine

Hunter’s Star – the sun came through the overhead branches and landed right on the yellow blocks making them shine brighter than the rest.  The quilt finished at 93×94 inches

IMG_3943

I thought it was weird how it did that with no planning – although it does hit a blue block too

IMG_3934

On this one you can see the different colors of binding strips

IMG_3935

It was a very good thing I took the photos in the middle of the afternoon

IMG_3942

as by 5 PM Monday we were having another short rain – heavy rain with pea size hail – the deck is wet again – lots of little bits of hail.  Earlier in the day I had planted the rest of the tomato plants that I had planted by seed – they are little still and just hadn’t wanted to grow maybe in the ground they will do better? Also planted some clematis that I had dug out from a different part of the yard then the ones seen to the left here – they are the same color.  I put them on the fence of the garden on the outside.  I felt I must move them as they were over grown and crowded by weeds where they were.

IMG_3950

We had strawberry shortcake for dessert

IMG_3952

as a lot of strawberries were picked Monday morning and more to pick by Wednesday.  The mixer bowl is full – I cleaned them and put layers of them in the freezer and will put them in ziplock bags today – should get 3 or 4 quarts out of them.

IMG_3926

Took forever to get a photo of this slink lizard yesterday afternoon.  I had seen it and it hid – I knew it would come back out if I was patient and it did and managed to get a close up – harmless little lizards – with the tail included maybe 6 inches long?

It’s Done

But we had rainy weather so I can’t get an outside photo until later today I bet.  But finally the binding is done, Hunter’s Star has been washed and dried – so here is an inside photo for now.  Linking to Design Wall MondayMonday Musings

The back

IMG_3915

Most of the Mercantile block was appliqued in place and I will finish it today – and you can see I do not worship a finished quilt LOL – I just tossed Hunter’s Star out of the way on the chair until I can get a photo of it!  I will soon be able to get back to the hexies – I just wanted to get caught up on these other projects

IMG_3923

The Clematis are blooming later than usual – our spring was so strange with the late freezes that several things are off balance I think.  These are usually blooming at the beginning of the month and the Weeping Cherry Tree still doesn’t even have all of it’s leaf’s on.  Half the branches are still bare but if you feel them they are not brittle  – I think the leaf buds were damaged and new ones had to form – we will see – if it had died I would think the branches would be brittle.  We had a different tree do that one year and it was finally well into May when it finally grew leafs.

IMG_3916

The clematis on this side doesn’t usually get this full and it is better than ever.

IMG_3917

The herbs and flowers seem to have established well and getting full.

IMG_3918

I cut this rose bush down to the ground in early February as it really looked dead and it came back.

Grandma’s Quilt Block & Binding

Grandma’s Quilt Block is the name of the fourth Mercantile block – the Mercantile Quilt is on Lori Holt’s blog and the directions will be there for a very long time from what I understand.  I am making this for an RSC quilt but it can be made with any fabric you wish to use – the patterns are free on Lori’s blog.  She actually has quite a few follow along quilts on there that she leaves the instructions up for.

I had gotten pieces cut Friday evening and more on Saturday morning and then got to stitching  – it is such an easy pattern to make

IMG_3907

Yellow is the RSC color for April and this is the last block for April that I am doing.  A close up of the middle of the block and yes I fussy cut the center tiny house that is a one inch square – it was a tiny house!

IMG_3910

Ready for the circle to be applique to to the backing square I will be hand stitching this circle down today and linking up with Quilting is More Fun than Housework Life in Pieces ––  Slow Sunday Stitching with Kathy

IMG_3909

The four completed – there are 25 more squares/circles to make – right now I am doing one a month but that is because I am still trying to get further on the Fat Quarter Shop quilt which has a deadline and yes I have not forgotten I have 2 borders to make still on the NYB – I intend to get back to that soon.

IMG_3911

Next months RSC color is pink! I have 3 baskets so I should be able to find enough for the three quilts that I am making.

IMG_3912

I will also finish the binding today besides stitching that circle down – a little less that a half side to finish finally on Hunter’s Star.

And I rolled it down last night to start on the left side and start to work my way over again.

Three sides on Hunters Star is now done  2 or 3 more times stitching with the evening news and it will be done – maybe if things dry out I will be able to take a photo outside Monday or Tuesday.

The fabric is picked out for my yellow Mercantile block – I hope to get this one done today linking to SoScrappy for the yellow month

Quilting on Carpenter’s Wheel – sometimes shutting off the lights in the room and standing off to the side to shoot the photo makes the quilting show up more doesn’t it.  This area is where I started to quilt last night.  Linking to Patchwork and Quilts

I picked a half of a gallon of strawberries yesterday morning before the rain started – forgot to take a photo I wanted to get done and in the house before the rain came.  Glad I did because it rained the rest of the day and probably it will be all weekend too.  I think I have gotten 1 1/2 gallons of strawberries so far and many more out there to ripen.

Whoever made a large purchase to the Fat Quarter Shop through my links thank you very much – that made a good commission for me.  I do appreciate it.

Carpenter’s Wheel

I have been moving so slow on the binding for The Hunters Star quilt I have the 3rd side just about finished – it will be too wet to display outside for awhile so I guess it is ok to take my time – give me another week LOL

IMG_3894

I still have one block to do for the RSC quilts – the yellow Mercantile block which will be I think the 4th block in the quilt which needs maybe 20-24 blocks – I haven’t looked at it since last month so I have lost track – it is the 26th today so I guess I need to take a break from the unseen quilt I am work on for the FQS – I must clear off the table and do that one in the next day or two and get it done before the next month color is announced.

Sneak Peak and Iris’s

I have a sneak peak for the Fat Quarter Shop quilt that I am making their name for the pattern will be English Ivy – I will be giving it a different name when I finish it.  I will be able to share it around May 10th I believe.  So right now I really can’t share much which means practically nothing or I would give away what the pattern looks like.  I think I will call mine Autumn Splendor or something fall like.

It is classic/vintage – but with modern colors and batiks totally different than what one would expect with little floral prints or whatever.

IMG_3843

Here are some of the colors I am using

IMG_3885

And a little more

IMG_3504 IMG_3834

And very pretty orange colors are in this layer – one layer cake 10 piece plus background will make the 9.5 inch block.

IMG_3510

And pretty blues – sorry this is all I can share right now.

IMG_3842

I found the prettiest Iris growing among the flowers – I must have bought a new one last year as it is nothing like the others I have growing – it is very ruffly and a very pretty blue compared to all the purple ones that I have.

IMG_3888

We are to get off and on rain the rest of the week so I cut some to bring in the house – I set it on the floor so I could capture the ruffles.

Have all of you heard that Quiltmania publications is going out of business?  This is so disappointing for so many quilters – it really was a great magazine and so pricey compared to most.  I had treated myself to a subscription to that one and Simple Moderne and I find out they are not reimbursing the money.  That leaves me and many others out of luck – I had 3 magazines left to get from both publications.  Some people say that they had just subscribed and had not even gotten one magazine and not getting any of their money back – one quilter had just spent over $200.00 on this!!  It just doesn’t seem right.  On the facebook page some are praising them for the fine magazine they had and wishing them luck in their life’s where as others like me are saying – hey what about my money – these were not cheap!  Anyhow if anyone is waiting for a magazine to arrive and had not heard – that is what is going on.  If you are doing the mystery quilt they are supposed to be putting out a link on all the instructions soon.
