Michael is the only angel recognized by name in both Christian and Jewish scriptures. He is usually shown carrying a sword or spear with which he has battled Satan in the war of heaven; he is the guardian of the Orthodox faith, a fighter against heresies, the patron saint of warriors.

He is shown above on the Arcangel Miguel package with his foot on Satan’s neck, as below in Guido Reni’s painting, “Archangel Michael” (1636), which hangs in Santa Maria della Concezione church in Rome.

Nineteenth century sources note that St. Michael is  “captain general of the host of Heaven, protector of the Hebrew nation, conqueror of the hosts of Hell, lord and guardian of souls, patron saint and prince of the Church Militant.”
