I’d say this is one of the more enticing scams I’ve encountered in my Craigslist experience primarily because it was carried out over weeks time by a sympathetic (and, consequently, credible) fraud.
Here’s how it hits you: You need a roommate (or, in my case, you’re looking to sublet). You advertise the room on Craigslist. You receive an email from sandrawilson010@aol.com. The fraud calls herself Sandra and claims to be living elsewhere in the country. My fraud claimed to be from Greece. (The fraud has terrible grammar; part of you is red-flagged, but another part of you attributes this to the alleged foreign origin.) The fraud claims to be interested in moving to your area, noting that “her uncle” told her it would be full of opportunities.
So where’s the scam? Continue: The fraud has to leave the country to care for her uncle, who allegedly is sick. The fraud maintains correspondence during the alleged trip. (The fraud does not message you for a number of days while “traveling.”) The fraud claims to be sending you a money order for the rental amount. (You are satisfied with a money order as it is like cash.) At some point, the fraud sends you a picture, which you assume to be the interested entity, although the image borders on “too good to be true” land. The fraud then tells you that the fraud’s personal items (e.g., a bed, suitcases of clothing, a computer desk, a car) will be shipped before the fraud arrives back stateside and that additional funds will be included in the money order to cover the shipping expenses. (The average cost to ship a car is $1,000.00.)
You are wary. Finally, you have been asked to pay something. The fact that the scam had not asked for payment until now (two weeks into correspondence) has made the scam appear credible up to this point. As you had not been asked to pay anything, you had no need to worry. Now, however, red flags should blind you. The fraud then self-inflicts a TKO (against the reasonably prudent person, that is) by telling you that instead of paying the shippers in person, you will need to mail them a check for the amount of the shipping; only once the shippers receive your payment will they ship the fraud’s items.
At this point, the disconnected person sees the scam. I fear that many people, though, have been won over by the endearing grammatical mistakes and attractive picture and have been suckered into sending money to the alleged shippers.
Once asked to send money, I Googled the email address from which I was receiving messages and found the following blog entry: http://in-myhumbleopinion.blogspot.com/2007/08/sandra-jones-i-can-smell-kind-of-person.html. That blog elaborates more of the story than I have. As you will read on that person’s blog, the fraud eventually asks that you wire the shipping money to Nigeria.
If nothing else up to this point has caused you angst, at long last, mention of Nigeria, the capital of scams, should set off every bell and whistle in even the most gullible person’s universe.
I hope anyone else whom this fraud attempts to scam will be enlightened by this blog entry.

Same exact story, including the uncle in finland and everything. I have been wary of this from the time she wanted to send me a check and have me send some of the funds to cover her moving costs. The check I received, I did give her my address, was from a place called chemonics international inc.
Here is what I don’t understand, how does she profit from this? I have the check and could, in theory, cash it. Even if I sent the funds to the spencer ambler address that still leaves me with about 1,000 bucks left over. The check was for 2,930 and the cost of shipping her items is 1,000. Do they find out my bank information once I cash the check? How does it work? I am so grateful I saw this before I decided to go any further. Are there any legal actions I can take against this person?
Jm, I followed her check to me to a bank in Fla. They would have cashed it w/ me having proper ID. PROBLEM–they would at some point find that the check was written on someone elses account (unauthorized) guess who would be liable for the money?? I hope you don’t say the bank 😦 She profits from the money you would send, and then, YES she would have your bank info. if you were silly enough to send a personal check. I think she mandates a money order which you have to pay for up front. Come on people–WAKE-UP–unfortunatly as I found out–nobody seems to want to do anything about her little scam–State Police, Attorney General, my Congressman–they seem to all be too busy B.S.ing people & gearing up for their next election run:(

I knew it was a scam after the fourth email or so, but we communicated for weeks before she sprung it on me. She sent me a check for $3,157 written out of the Aurora Loan Services, 10350 Pack Meadows, Littleton CO. Yes…the check actually misspelled “park” in the address!! It was a halfway decent scam and pretty entertaining. I now have a souvenir check worth a lot of money I can show to all my friends. LOL Poor Lisa, I feel so bad for her losing her uncle and all!!!

Earlier today, I contacted the Dallas PD, Crimestoppers Division. They’re checking with other divisions in the PD to see if any warrants are outstanding for either the name Spencer L Ambler or the address in Dallas, TX. Even if no warrant exists, they are sending an officer to the address to speak with the resident.

Goof thing i googled the scam. The message got said her dad would be handling the payment via United State Bank Cashier Check before she moved.
Also said she needed
(1) Full name as it will appear on the payment.
(2) Physical Address
(3) phone number
Which made me stop because it was only her 2nd message to me.

Do you Know someting? 2 months ago I was contacted by HER, she had this client to reach me trough her to make a translation (which I did…) and then, I received his cheque… then she asked me for some money for her granny who lived in california, and had serious kidney problems (as she gave me full-detailed information, I found out this “poor old woman” is 47!), And as I wasn’t sending any money at all, she started telling me I wasn’t honest… But I had already told Dr. Phil my story! Now I found out that cheque was a fraude… and meanwhile she stopped sending me e-mails! Has she been arrested?

This exact thing happened to me just now. Her name was Claire Mathew and was from Finland. Early red flags: does not privide a phone number after repeated requests (always has a ‘good’ reason), never answers direct questions about themselves, and they repeatedly ask for name/address to send payment and for you to take the ad down.
Has anyone received a US mailing address for Claire Mathew? It’s possible that Sandra Wilson disappeared because police looked into the Texas mailing address and scared somebody away. If you receive a mailing address for any of these scammers, post it here, and we’ll notify the local PD regarding the fraud. Thanks.
What’s intriguing is that both the Washington and Texas addresses are Children’s Hospital addresses, one in Seattle and one in Orange County. The Texas address for Sandra Wilson was an apartment, so that seemed shady enough. But a Children’s Hospital?

I did correspond to her, but she seemed a little odd in the emails that she was writing and how she was writing them. She is beating around the bush when answering my questions and something didn’t seem right. So, being a nurse, I just asked her for her full name and license number as a practicing nurse in her state so i can look her up and see if “i can help her find a job” here in California.

Well, on November 22nd 2012, I’m another victim of Sandra Wilson. Was on dating website called “www.girlsdateforfree.com” and got invitation from her ‘sanddrr01″ to join her chat. Being an Ottawa guy, I noticed her location is also Ottawa, but as we begin to chat, she tells me that she’s some nurse working in Shangai in China for some humanity mission. She says she’s on a two year contract and in her 9 month and looking to find someone serious. She says she was born in Brazil, her boyfriend was killed in car accident, and raising her 5 year old daughter by herself and that she is pretty fond of her accomplishments. She sent me 8 pictures of herself, very cute girl and somewhat sexy, she sent using her email address “sanbabb@gmail.com”. we exchanged photos, and complimented them.
When asking about her parents, she says they died at age 62 and 56… yeah right I said to myself… Then when asking how much money she made as a nurse, I notioced that her english skills started to diminish, and said she was to get paid only at the end of her 2 year contract, and they provided her food and lodging… yeah rigyht, something everybody would do I guess, she thinks all men are stupid or what ?
Anyway, carrying on the conversation, she mentioned she was looking to relocate and was expecting me to support our decision to have her fly over and sharing the cost.. She started getting upset once I said that she would need to pay for the hotel and flight herself and that I was not going to share any cost but willing to meet her and start up friendship that coul dlead to long term relationship…. Be aware guys and gals, never send any money no matter how nice the other person may sound… lots of fraud everywhere.

ya just got hit from a Sandra Wilson on dating site! she even text me on my cell for 1/2 hr lol! claims shes from ohio now in china w/5yro daughter humanitarian missin! i had similar experience before got sent a $2500 money order that was perfect right down to water marks! bank said they woulda cashed it(had friend that was teller)explained scam you cash money order send it to person in other country(scammer) days later when it doesnt clear you legally have to cover it! by that time they got your money(usually western union)nothin u can do! again local police didn’t even wanna hear about it! She purports to come from England, Manchester City, (that is a football team not a place) The City of Manchester is correct. She is saying she was widowed 2 years ago and is looking for someone to look after her and her son, her grammar is African, always using the words “my dear this or my dear that” which is not used in general English by a young person (32) and gushing religion in every sentence, so sad these scum of the World. Anyway be warned !!!!

She is now on Facebook scamming widowed men. She got me for 1000.00 . She said she loved me and wanted to come be my wife within the first month of talking with her. She claims she is being evicted . Her country won’t help her with food, she lost her job due to a fire. Comes up with a new excuse every week as to why she needs money. Then there’s the ticket money! “Her friend “has her half so you need to send your half. Won’t let you buy the ticket!! Sent her the money then well to no surprise she doesn’t show. Doesn’t answer your messages and disspears from the world.
In 2019 she’s claiming to have been US-born and have zero foreign language experience, making her constant poor grammar even more strange.
She added me on Skype, saying she loved the look of my profile picture. It’s a drawing of a mouse.
By the second day she was talking about soulmates, true love and trust (in an almost Christian Weston Chandler-esque redundant way), how she was single but wants to marry and have kids. Tells me she’s practicing to become a nurse at age 31, which feels a little late considering she apparently has no previous job experience. Says she lives with her mother and uncle, and her father died in a car accident at some vague time in the past. Less than a week of knowing her and she asks me what I’m buying her for her birthday.
Keeps asking for my cellphone number. Gets aggressive and accuses me of not trusting her when I’m hesitant, and I keep telling her that I WANT to believe and trust everything but I’ve been hurt a lot in the past by other girls so my trust isn’t easily won. Keep telling her to slow down and take her time. Account says she’s from Los Angeles, she says she’s staying in some vaguely defined West African country for a few months. Another account with the same name and birthday information adds me on Skype, claims to be from Texas in profile info. She doesn’t notice me pointing out the inconsistency.
She occasionally does Skype video calls showing things like loads of 100 dollar bills stacked up on her coffee table. TOTALLY NOT SUSPICIOUS, her uncle is a “businessman” dealing in “gold and oil”. Can’t seem to remember that I don’t have a camera or microphone hooked up to my PC.
At first I thought she might just be mentally challenged, but after three weeks of this difficult woman I decided to Google “Sandra Wilson Skype” and wound up finding this page…she never got around to asking me for money, just demanding my cellphone number, asking when she can visit me in person, and that sort of thing. I was sorta expecting this kind of case…much as I wished it wasn’t true.
