This is for the Jedi Knight in You!

This was SO state of the art

This was SO state of the art

In the history of LucasArts, those who loved their first-person shooters had their Star Wars fix fulfilled with the Jedi Knight series. Starting with Dark Forces, gamers were introduced to the story of Kyle Katarn and his soon-to-be-realized powers with the force. For the first time, gamers could take blaster in hand and head into the corridors of the Star Wars universe and blast Stormtroopers to their hearts content.

And it’s great. And now, for those who want to replay or never had a chance to play these games, LucasArts has release the entire set of games on Steam and Direct2Drive. It’s time to get your game on.

A few things I think people who purchase these games should know, at least for DF/JK/MotS (JO and JA aren’t done downloading yet):

    – Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Mysteries of the Sith have not received any updates since their CD releases.
    – For DF/JK/MotS No-CD cracks are included (because the previous releases will check for CDs!)
    – Jedi Knight includes no music since it tries to play audio tracks from the CD (MotS too I think).
    – Jedi Knight has had problems running on Vista and up as well as with some newer hardware. LA changed some default settings so it should work better but it will break community levels and community mods with 16-bit textures.
    – All community made tools, levels, and mods should still work with Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Mysteries of the Sith.
    – DF, JK, MotS are not Steam integrated so you can copy the folders to a portable device for gaming on the go, though you have to know a bit about the command line parameters to use…
    – For DF, it looks like you run dosbox.exe –conf ..\dosbox.conf ..\game\dark.exe
    – For JK and MotS LA has the –windowgui parameter used by default to prevent crashes on the main menu. You might not need it on XP and earlier, or with older hardware.
    – JK and MotS include the original InstallShield uninstaller script!
    – JO and JA appear to have been recompiled (likely to remove the CD checks). I don’t see any Steam integration (possibly these can be used portably too!) however as they haven’t fully downloaded I can’t check for sure.

Man, the Dark Forces saga are some of my all time favorite games. We really need a new one guys, especially after that cliffhangery ending of Jedi Academy…

    Warning to any prospective buyers:

The version of Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 on Steam is identical to the original 1997 retail version. It does not function correctly on modern computers.

    Addendum:

    – Jedi Knight and MotS may be finicky about connecting to multiplayer games online. I personally have had problems in the past with it not liking NAT. Although NAT was not terribly common when JK came out (everyone had dial-up), pretty much now if you have broadband you’re using NAT in some way.
    – The tool JKLauncher at http://www.jkhub.net/project/show.php?projid=47 is an in-development tool that may help you browse for and connect to Jedi Knight games. It may help work around connection problems using IP addresses by hand in JK (by NAT or whatever).
    – Using VPN software such as Hamachi with some friends can also help to work around the problems by simulating a LAN environment without NAT that will not confuse JK.

I’ve noticed that DF: Jedi Knight freaks out if you run it at high resolutions (on the Steam version).. Otherwise awesome 🙂

Jedi Knight won’t run on Vista 64-bit, but fortunately MotS will.

    Where are the docs ?

I’ve downloaded Dark Forces and Jedi Knight and I can’t find any docs 😦 ?

Frankly huge huge disapointment here : no effort to make JK work on mondern machines, no music and NO EVEN DOCUMENTATION ??

Is this a kind of a joke ?

When Lucasarts announced the release of older games a few months ago this is the series I was waiting on, finally I’d be able to play them on a modern computer… now to find that isn’t the case… 😦

Fil: Try turning off 3D acceleration on display options on JK. I got it to work for me then.

It’s rather disappointing to not be able to use 3D acceleration / high res textures in Jedi Knight on Vista. Also it pulls you out of the game’s immersion to jump between windowed and full screen modes during cutscene playback. And no CD Music? 😦

Please, when you get around to putting the X-Wing series on Steam, take time to ensure they’re optimised for modern systems. I’d gladly have paid double for JK and MOTS if they ran properly, and I’ll happily pay $10-15 for X-Wing, TIE and XWA if they’ve been shown a little love prior to their Steam release.

Dark Forces plays great though (bundled with a auto-configured DOSBOX launcher), and haven’t installed JO or JA yet.

Pssst. Steam has the original release date wrong for Jedi Outcast.

I don’t want to lose my trust in my favorite company now that it seems to be back on track (or at least trying to), but I am a bit dissapointed about this. The games were already made, there is very little investment in putting them back! Little fixed costs, even no need to forecast the demand in terms of unit production, since the distribution is digital and outsourced. I can go on with a muuuch bigger list that can cover a page, but I want to stay inside my point and make it short.

As jp-30, I wouldn’t mind paying 15 bucks -or something like 12.99 if you want to make a bit it more consistent with the rest of the titles (although these are classics, unlike Republic Commando or Battlefront). I know that a dollar may scare away a few casual gamers, but are them the real target anyways? I thought Lucasarts’ main objective with all this was to recapture the old fans again (of course, in a profitable way, nobody blames LA for that). And even if JK wasn’t as profitable (I’d really doubt it) because you would have to spend a bit more money to make it more enjoyable, you have the rest of the titles -which are going well in sales as I’ve heard- to share the risk. God, I’m even writing a business essay about you guys, but this “lack of love” (quoting jp-30) kind of defeats the purpose.

Please show the X-Wing series the love you didn’t show to Jedi Knight and Loom. We still love you guys, that’s why we care to give you some feedback.

    A couple notes:

Windows 7 nVidia issues have been ‘solved’ by downgrading to a 186.18 driver version for Jedi Knight.

Jedi Knight multiplayer connection issues can be solved by downloading a piece of software called Hamachi. It’s good to have.

Anybody know where I could find a public server to play the steam version of JK2? The multiplayer is the only reason I purhcased the game. The single player part of the game sucks the balls and I’d love to hit up some bespin or Canyon Oasis.
